Turning down the volume on ads
Here's an interesting news article: Advertisers will have to turn down the volume. This it is only in Italy, though.

I sure hope they do something about it here in the U.S. soon!! Especially on Sci-Fi/USA. They may already be trying to get around this by instead lowering the volume on their programming. The ads are about the same volume as other networks, but when the program comes on you can't even hear the program. Here, by the time I get it turned up loud enough to hear them talking clearly it's so loud you can hear the hiss of background noise. Then when the ads come on it blows your ears out.

Yeah, I remember this explanation about why the commercials are louder than the show, but when the new Stargate episodes showed up, I noticed that even the network's own lead-in ad was a LOT LOUDER than the show itself.

Yes, I noticed their own lead-ins/ads were louder too. It's the same on USA, at least for their own programming (Monk/Psych, etc)
VERY ANNOYING! I can't imagine how bad it is for someone in a house with kids at 10pm watching Stargate Atlantis. The kids show up at school the next day all bleary-eyed because they kept getting woken up every 10 minutes with a blaring TV when the ads came on.
