StephaneM's XMLTV importer Question

Hi everyone, I am new at this, so please be patient!

I have no internet access on my PC with SageTV, so I would prefer to use XMLTV for the guide data, since I understand that one can copy the xml file to a thumb drive then load it into SageTV. I have tried following the instructions on setting up XMLTV, however with limited success.

Demedius' importer seemed like it worked, however only about half of the data came into SageTV, the other half of the channels said "No Data".

I gave up and switched to StephaneM's XMLTV import tool, which seemed more straight forward, but I think some residual settings are causing the same problem to occurr.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? If I post my settings and/or properties up here can someone take a look at them and let me know where I have gone wrong?

Thanks,

gerberdude.

You can first review the logs to see if something is wrong :

* The windows event viewer log will show you if there is some show or channels that my Importer cannot handle (it will also tells you if some channels doesn't have any data)

* The xmltv.log file (in the SageTV folder) will show you if there is any problem when SageTV try to load the data.

Getting it right the first time is supposed to be easy but you'll have to make sure that :

* You do have Java runtime 1.5
* You do have set up my Importer when SageTV was completely stopped (UI and service)
* In the Importer GUI, you should review carefully what you do in the channel editor (this is where all good and bad things happen) : especially all channels must be edited (name / call-sign / number and lineup)

If all is good , when you setup your tv source in SageTV and choose the XMLTV option for guide data, you should see exactly the lineup names you choosed in the XMLTV Importer, then SageTV will load the data.

Regards,
Stéphane.

Also my properties file

Here is my Sage.Properties file attached as a text document. I have a feeling that the problem might be in there somewhere.

Hi,

Those errors means that the Importer cannot found any programs in the XMLTV file for a channel. This is either :

* because there is really no programs
* because all programs are out of air date
* because of some parsing error / unexpected error (if it was the case it would be also in the log).

The common mistake is improper time zone configuration, if you choose a wrong time offset in the Importer, the Importer can think all programs are out of date. So you'll have to review the time zone configuration (usually the Importer set it automatically for you and this is fine if your XMLTV file does have date in your local time zone. If not, just take a look at the XMLTV file and write down the time offset used, for instance +0500, you'll have to use the exact opposit in the Importer : -5)

Also, in your SageProperties file, I can see that the XMLTV Plugin is not set, and as such you cannot use XMLTV data. To fix this : shut down SageTV completely, then uninstall and reinstall the XMLTV Importer.

Regards,
Stéphane.

Success!! I have updated all fo the guide data by downloading a new xmltv file and selecting the lineup within sagetv.

However, All of my shows are now off by 1 hour. I am in Missouri, USA, Central Daylight time (-0500) and have this selected when I grab the xmltv file. . .also, when I use the xmltv importer, I select 5 as the time offset. But still my data is coming in 1 hour early (a show that actually airs at 10 PM is shown as starting at 9 PM.) Is there a setting I missed, or should I just try and uninstall and reinstalling again?

Thanks so much!

Found it!

Found it! The setting I missed is that XMLTV is downloaded at a -0500 "time offset", not a "time zone", then in the importer I simply selected my time zone as 6 and then selected the daylight savings box. The I removed the source from SageTV, then readded the source and went through the source setup again. It then reloaded the guide data and everything was where it belonged.

I do want to go over a couple of xmltv items, however, just so that I can be sure it is configured correctly.

Do I have these steps in the right order?
  1. I don't have internet on my SageTV Box, so I will be "grabbing" the xmltv file as a1.xml from a different computer, then saving onto a thumb drive.

  2. I will then load it onto my SageTV box, just overwriting the old guide file.

  3. Do I have to rerun the XMLTV Importer again? or will SageTV pick up the data on its own?

  4. (If I have to run the importer, do I have to shut down SageTV to do it?)

  5. Either way, how does SageTV know that I have updated the xml file, and when will it update its own guide from that file?

  6. I think the default # of days for xmltv is 7, is there a reason I shouldn't get 10 or 12 days of program data?

You can do that, or if your SageTV Box does have access to your local network and to the computer downloading the XMLTV file, you can point the Importer to this file on your "Internet" computer directly.

This is Ok.
Quote:

Yes the Importer needs to run against each new XMLTV file : the Importer transforms the data for SageTV. Then SageTV using a Java plugin load those produced data each 24 hours. You can automate the Importer if you wish (so the only thing left to you is to copy the XMLTV file on regular basis).
Quote:

No there is no need to shutdown SageTV.
Quote:

It doesn't know, it try to update its guide every 24 hours. With the XMLTV Importer, it just load the data produced by the Importer (Note : It doesn't matter if you don't update your XMLTV file each day)

It depends on the grabber, depending on the one your are using it could be more or less (I guess Zap2it is 7 days).

The usual tip is to :

* Download for the first time 7 days (or whatever number of days you can get at most)
* Then each day : grabs today and the 7th day

This way : you always have 7 days in the guide, you are downloading less data each day, and get current listing for today (in case of late change).

But if you really cannot access local network on your SageTV box, then I guess that twice a week will be ok.

Regards,
Stéphane.

Thanks so much for the help, I can't believe this is actually working. I think I will upload the xml file over the old file on a weekly basis. How can I set up the importer to be automated to run in the middle of the night?

How can I set up the importer to be automated to run in the middle of the night?
* You first have to made a donation and install the full version of the Importer.
* Use the Wizard to specify the day and hour you want to run the Importer unattended: this creates a Windows scheduled task, it only runs if your there is a session running on your SageTV PC, if not you can configure the task to do so, that is setting a Windows username and password for the task to run.

Regards,
Stéphane.
