That was exactly it! I choose 1280x720@50 from the list and now it shows perfect widescreen

Mission accomplished.

Now for the next challenge: getting back all my channels....

Check that this selected setting survives a reboot: in previous versions of the nvidia drivers, after every reboot you had to reset the video mode in that advanced timings -- this has been fixed in the version I am now using ( the latest non-beta as of a few weeks ago)

Thanks for the warning! Tried a reboot and all is still fine. Installed drivers 91.31 last night because I couldn't even select these custom resolutions with the drivers I had before.
