SageClient and Placeshifter Side by Side

Last night I did the following test.

Two PC's both running Placeshifter and a SageClient.

Two 32" Sharp TVs sitting side by side.

Ran PS on one and SC on the other. PS had the better picture by far. Live TV and Recorded TV.

Switched them. Ran SC on the PC that was running PS. And visa versa.

Same result FAR superior picture quality on PS. For the first time ever the WAF was huge.

Client was running with PureVideo on both machines.

Anybody know why this is?

I don't know why that is, but I have noticed that as well (kind of). The picture quality of my MVP is way better than the full PC client I had before, with the Nvidia PureVideo decoders and all of that.

Pic Quality

Are the SageTV Media Extender and the Happauge MVP the same? I've thought about trying these, but wondered if one was better or if Sage just licensed them from Hauppauge.

Well the MVP has a hardware decoder so that is why it has better picture quality than a PC but I am not sure why PS has a better picture than the client. Maybe it's because PS doesn't use the Sage media player (I think it uses MPlayer instead).

Yes -- the current media extender is the Hauppauge MVP.

So can I use my existing two client licenses on two Hauppauge MVPs if I remove the licenses from the PC's they are on?

No extender licenses are different than client licenses. When the extender was released Sage offered a trade-in program for a short time. Officially that's over, but if I were interested, I'd contact Sage directly. They seem to be pretty good about working with customers.

That's not surprising, I see you're running SDTVs, PC output to SDTV is sub-optimal in many ways.

I'm somewhat surprised that the Placeshifter looks better, but with so many variables, it's not unthinkable.

So to the OP:

Are you using the same video card in both machines?
What decoder do you have selected in SageClient?
What renderer do you have selected in SageClient?

I'm not sure what decoder the placeshifter uses (might be mplayer) but I'm about 99% sure it uses Overlay.

You might want to give Dscaler 5 decoders a try, I think they have a similar codebase to mplayer.

No, that offer is definitely expired & has been for months. It was a limited time offer only.
