Tired of All the Polls?

So, are you tired of all the polls that seems to be showing up lately?

That's weird... The fourth item ("I think a poll be great if there were an idea the developers didn't already know about.") is not one that I put in my original list.

How would that have gotten there?

Polls would be more useful if people would ask the right questions. Questions of the form "Should the devs implement X?" or "Should feature Y exist?" aren't useful because some people will answer Yes even if they have no interest in that feature themselves, simply on the grounds that "choice is good" or "more features = more customers". So polls of that sort don't give accurate info on how important a specific feature really is to the users. There's too much latitude for other factors to enter the equation.

If the goal is to prioritize feature development, then the only useful sort of poll question is "Would you use feature X if it existed?" This cuts right through the murky abstractions and gets down to the real issue of how many people actually want that specific feature.
