I voted "Don't Care." Not sure why anyone would vote "no" for it's nice to have options, but I wouldn't use it.
Maybe it would be nice when I pull the MyHD card, and add a second BDA tuner, but until then I'll just use a Scheduled task. |

I voted "Don't care" but I don't have a use for it. I can't think of a time I would want it to record and then shut down. I have recordings scheduled at various times everyday. I have it running 24/7.

No need for it by me, I run 24/7, but if they want to add that as an option, then that's fine.
So, "Don't Care". |

If you read it as "Should the devs spend time developing features that hardly anybody would use?" then I vote No to that too.

Why would anyone want to shut down the computer after a recording is finished? I mean for me, I have Sage Server running so I have all my TV's in the house recording to my file server. I suppose someone who does not have a file server may like this feature. For me, my file server is on 24/7 and does all my recordings and also catches all my faxes so that I can just delete the junk faxes. I had to get rid of the fax machine because of the junk faxes and it was wasting too much paper.

My HTPC is set to go into standby mode after 30minutes of inactivity and wakes back up for the next recording. All works perfectly.

judging from his post counts, the OP might be new to SageTV, and wasn't aware of the power management to standby feature. But Opus is right, he probably meant standby and not shutdown.

What is the advantage of going into StandBy? I one tried to put it in standby and Sage never came out without me clicking with the mouse.

I would quite like Sage to be able to reboot the PC once every 24 hours during periods of inactivity, just to clean out any crud (such as the handle leak in JRE 1.5.6) and ensure smooth running.
An option to reboot every Nth day between at some point between user specified times (say 03:00 to 05:00) would be ideal. I could just use the shutdown -r command on a scheduled task but having Sage do this would guarantee that it never interrupts a recording. Cheers Eric |

S3 standy works well for us and appreciate having it. But a "shutdown" would not serve any purpose I can think of. Standy power consumption is not much more than the average night stand alarm clock.

Ok!!
I guess some of you didnt understand what I want to do! I record 2 or 3 shows in the evening maybe 2 to 3 times a week. I work shift work (12 hours) so I'm gone all evening and night!! So when sagetv is done recording after 10 or 11 oclock in the evening the computer runs until I come back from work in the morning!!! So what I was saying is it would be nice for sagetv to shut down the computer at a set time or after the recording for that day ! Is that better? |

Clearer-yes. But what you could do is configure your computer go to sleep. It hardly uses any power when it sleeps. And Sage works with that already.

Works with IR enabled or disabled, and does not reboot if an optional process is still running (for instance SA or Comskip). No promise that I will release it shortly as I just switch from Delphi to C# and still a lot to learn, but I will try to keep coding

why???
I, for one, will never understand why people still insist on turning off their computers. it's not like a toaster or a power saw. It's meant to be ON. The thermal changes that a computer goes through cycling on and off will weaken solder connections and eventually cause failure. Additionally, Most Hard Drive failures happen when they first spin up or spin down. Once they are running they are much more stable.
I guess that all of that harping by our mothers to "turn out that light" stays with us. |

So it is a good solution that my server wakes up when there is something to record and goes to standby after that.

Three questions:
1. Is there something I need to do to wake the workstations up? When I tried to put them in a powersave mode to go into standby (from windows power mgmt) they would not wake up when I pressed Select on the remote in Sage. 2. Is there a right answer as to whether to use power mgmt? 3. I wonder just how much electricity and/or computer life is saved by going into standby. Mike |
