Info please on MVP
We have been using SageTV client in a second room to watch tv via computer. Finally, we broke down and boguht a large screen TV for that room. Now, is MVP the solution for second room SageTV? In other words, with MVP in the 2nd room, can I watch a different movie stored on the Main computer than the movie somebody is watching from my main license of SageTV? Thus, basically, can the 2 rooms watch different stuff without connecting to the computer in the 2nd room? And will the interface in the 2nd room look and act like the client interface does today?

The quick answer is yes.
You just have to purchase the extender license or buy the MVP from SAGE so it comes with and extender license. The only thing you may loose is a PC client is more capable in displaying multiple file types compared to the MVP transcodeing process that will put a strain on the server it the video on the MVP is not an MPEG2. Also, if you had a DVD player in the PC client it will have to be transcoded at realtime from the Server's DVD drive for the MVP. Last edited by jquinlan; 05-11-2006 at 06:33 AM. |

jquinlan-I do not believe you can stream files from the server's DVD drive. I'm not sure if that is what you were referrencing though. But-you are right that you will lose the ability to play back physical DVD's (because the MVP doens't have a DVD drive). You can still playback Divx and .vobs that are stored on the server but they have to be transcoded first--which takes some CPU power.
Garyellis--is your new TV HD? The MVP only outputs via S-video so you may notice a little drop in PQ but it has a hardware decoder--so it should be just as good as the PVR-350. I have my MVP hooked up to a 42" HD Plasma and the picture quality is surprisingly great-no complaints here. I can't wait for an HD extender but for now it works. JUC

Why not use the Sage Client license you already have on that client computer in the second room and hook up that computer to the new TV instead of watching on the computer monitor?

Thanks for the replies...
The second room is my daughter's room and we have a client license there, but the pc is a laptop and she moves it around the room as she IM'speople. So,not practical to connect to the TV. What I got out of the replies is that I should expect the extender with MVP to act just like SageTV on my main computer, except for DVD's which I can handle that. I want her to be able to record shows in the second room and play them back,etc.. Thanks.. |
