Encoder card at client?

Opus, if this thread is in the wrong section of the forum please move it.

I am thinking about expanding my HTPC STV system and there is something I don't quite understand how to do. If you have a central server(in a closet somewhere) and clients at your main TV in the living room say and another in the bedroom, how can you have an encoder card like the Hauppauge PVR-150at each TV. I use DirectTv boxes at each TV which would need to stay there, and could not be moved to the central server location (closet). I still want to be able to use the DirecTv boxes for time shifting programming via the s-video output to a PVR-150 card. It is my understanding that the clients cannot use any cards because the client software does not support them. Can the central STV server be set to use the PVR-150 cards that would be at the client location(s)?

You will need to run SageClient and SageRecorder, or SageTV on the client in that case. With such a setup SageRecorder (or SageTV) acts as a "network encoder" (or "encoding server" if you choose SageTV) recieving commands from the server and controlling the tuner accordingly.

SageRecorder does not support the full set of hardware that SageTV does though.

I wouldn't even look at SageTVRecorder any more, since it doesn't support using the PVR-150 & won't have support for newer cards added. If you really want a tuner at each client, then you need to use a full installation of SageTV on every system where there is a tuner. The v5 manual has a little info on setting up network encoders in Appendix G, on p. 248.
