Question Girder and SageTV Question

Ok, I'll say right up front, I'm new with this Girder thing, so my question may be clueless, but...

I'm using Netremote along with Girder and the USB-UIRT to control AV components. I also would like to use Netremote and Girder to control SageTV. Obviously I could teach Girder all the Hauppauge remote commands and use the USB-UIRT to control SageTV, but it would seem to make more sense to have Girder communicate directly with SageTV. I've done some searching on this forum and have downloaded a couple of the GML files that others have created, but none of these things seem to address directly what I wish to accomplish.

Can someone suggest where I go to learn how to do what I want to do? Or has someone already done this and can share their GML?

Thanks,
Ralph

Ralph,

Can someone assist Ralph who is using Girder? Also, if anyone has the time and would care to share their experience using Girder with SageTV, we could post it to our website for others to reference in the future. Kind of a step by step document to set it up?

Thanks ahead if anyone has the time and is willing.

I asked for this months ago...

A SageTV 'How To Setup Girder' FAQ/Walkthrough would be awesome.

I am not the one to write it though. I barely got it worked, and only through keyboard commands, not Send Message.... I gave up on that a long time ago.

Jason

Way beyond me but this might get you started.

To do what you want to do you need to use the Internet Event Server in Girder. This is a plugin that comes with Girder.

I'm not that familiar with netremote but I found this on their forum: The code you need to put in your Buttons is 5001 0000 0000 0002 ffff 0000 0001 0000. That is the IR Code you need to put in any button you want to send an "Internet Event" to Girder, then whatever is the name of the IR Event will be transmited to Girder as an Internet Event. so whatever Girder command has that Internet Event as its trigger will get executed.

With all of that you would use the sage.gml file that you have probably already downloaded. So in the gml file instead of learning an event such as pushing your button on your remote control, you would need to learn it the "Internet Event" or something like that.

Obviously someone with more expertise needs to help you but hopefully this is a start.

Gerry

On the hardware forum there are already some good how to guides about using Sage and GIRDER, defeinately enough information to put together a how-to document. Also, there some example .gml files, and some good explanations on how to use them. search for usb, uirt and girder,

At the moment I am very busy os i can't really help with writting anything, but i will try and help on specific questions if you can't find the answers over in hardware. I have been using Girder for a couple of years on and off (although am by no means an expert!) so i may be able to help some ppl out,

Matt

I have SageTV, girder and the USB-UIRT working together. Ive used netremote in the past, but only for JR Media Center.

I would say to get started, download the sagetv gml from the girder download site, then test out the file. You do not have to teach girder your hauppauge remote buttons to execute sagetv because the sagetv gml contains all the commands supported by sagetv like "channel up" through the "send message" plugin.

im just not sure how you link that to netremote. perhaps that internet server plugin suggested by gplasky.

I've been thinking about doing a write up for some time now (since that FAQ thread was posted). I will try to take a crack at it this weekend but I can't promise much as I'm very busy lately.

For starters, here are some threads that might be of assistance:

Thanks for all the replies. I will review and see if I can figure something out from all this.
I was a bit confused by the Sage.gml file though. It appears to use the USB UIRT plug-in, am I misunderstanding this?
Thanks.

i think that you are seeing that usb uirt plugin in plugin box because you have the plugin loaded. the gml should have no control over what plugins you have loaded.

Duh. Ok. I had not installed the "SendMessage" plug-in. So perhaps I can use the Internet Server function. This is how other commands are pass to Netremote. I will try and will report back.
Thanks.

Girder FAQ

Ok, well I got this to work. Once I realized that I did not have the "SendMessage" plug-in activated, all became crystal clear. The SageTV.gml file works great and I have had no problem interfacing with Netremote. My thanks and apologize to all.

Since I started this thing, I think I should finish it by writing a how-to with links, so I commit to do this over the next couple of days.

Thanks
Ralph

Girder FAQ

Ok. I did it. Took a little longer than planned, but here is my SageTV-Girder-Netremote FAQ.

Please review and provide me with any corrections and additions as needed.

Thanks again to the support received from this forum. I've got this sucker working pretty good!

I would like to give a big thank you to Ralphjb for his work on the Girder FAQ. We have posted a link to it on our 3rd party support page at http://www.sage.tv/3rdparty.html where Girder is discussed at the bottom. If anyone has any additional thoughts, just let us know.

Sorry I didn't get to your PM, are you looking for a Girder download link or the GML file?

That was a long time ago!

That web site is gone. I have to dig out the original file. I will publish to a different URL and post that here.

I guess what I was looking for was enough information to determine if Girder was a solution for me or not. What I wanted to be able to do is to control my cable box from my HD extender. The SageTV USB-UIRT module seems to only be capable of typing in the channel numbers. It would be great if it could do something like go up one channel and down one channel, as I think it would tune faster. I would also like to be able to tune in and record a PPV show.

I am now thinking that Girder won't do that, as a I saw another post from around June that is trying to address the issue (I saved the link on another computer, so I don't know it right now).

It does point to something else that is a problem, we have links in the forums that die when a web site go down. Could Sage provide user web space to hold these files and tips, so they won't be lost?
