Thanks.
I am using SageTV as a VCR, to record old series of shows from cable TV, then burn to DVD. Not using as server or to view from computer.
I am using ATI 9600 XT AIW now, but tech from SageTV say they do not support it. I was going to upgrade my tuner card but now I am not sure which one to use.
What would the recommended tuner card for my situiation be the solution without spending a fortune?
Thanks,

For the original post:

Another option for recording HD from cable. If you have the supported HD cablebox, you can get sage to record HD through the firewire port as discussed in this thread:

For SD analog TV the Hauppauge 150 or 500. Nvidia also makes a new dual tuner that is supposed to have excellent picture quality, but I think some people are having problems getting it to play nice with other tuners.

I have the DVICO fusion 5 gold usb. It supposedly does open QAM unencrypted Digital channels over Cable which could contain the HD network channels. But I don't know that it does that for sure. I bought my unit used and the previous owner said that he plugged it in and set it up for digital reception and got a few channels but he didn't explain which ones they were.

I am on a different cable provider which doesn't have digital tv so I am using my tuner for over the air HD. You would have to check with your cable provider to see if the encrypt their HD content. Then likely it will only be the network feeds in HD. If you want things like DiscoveryHD you will probably have to wait for a cable card solution.

But only using the fusion PVR software. The MyHD 130 card is the same way. They can do QAM, but only when using their own software. The BDA drivers do not support the QAM features, and Sage uses the BDA driver.

Thats the way I understand it.

But I also understand it to be that Microsoft spec'ed out the BDA driver for those vendors who wanted to support MCE. And that Microsoft did not request/require QAM support in the BDA driver, so that is why it is not included. I dunno if it can be added to the BDA driver as an "extra" if DVICO even wanted to.

Yes to the first question, the MIT MyHD-130. It will work with unencrypted QAM HD from either OTA or cable. The AVS forum, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=647837
would be a good place to get additional info.

Question 2, no. There may be some possibility of it working in conjunction with Sage, but this possibliity is out in the futrue. Check this thread http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13798
