Want to confirm installation of SageTV and Client

I have two computers. One with SageTV installed with RAID0 400gig with Hauppauge 350. The 2nd computer has Hauppauge 250. Each computer has its own Satellite receiver box.

Should I install SageTV Client on the 2nd computer or should I install the full SageTV since its got a Sat Box.

Since you have a PVR250 installed in your other PC, you're probably better off installing SageTV. SageTV Client will not use the PVR 250 that is in your other PC. Unless you end up using SageRecorder and do network encoding. I believe that's how it works.

I have no clue what Sage Recorder is for or what network encoding is for. I asked once before and was told just to use SageTV and SageTV client.

I am having trouble recording shows on SageTV. Ive been watching lots of shows and nothing is in the Guide for replay. Strange.

ok I will try doing this. I guess. Im not a network technician but a A+ MS certified tech. So don't know much about networking. Understood about 60% of that link and I only understood %30 of Main Lobby server when I tried to read it last night.

I just know that I will have a Media server with RAID5 as E: drive (should have mapped it as M There is a Hauppauge 350 card in that. Then I will have 2 more computers each with Hauppauge 250 cards. Each card will have its own DirectTV sat box. I want to be able to watch a differant channel on each computer. Be able to record too. I thought just plain SageTV did all that.
I was going to map the RAID array to the two other computers.

I can try to follow the direction on that link you provided. Its not clear what to do exacty. Just have Sage Recorder installed on the client machines? Or do I need SageTV client installed too.

Just to clarify.

The answer depends on which system you will be watchning the recorded shows and
where the two computers are located.

If they are in seperate locations and you want to watch TV or recordings in both locations
then install SageTV on one machines and then install SageTVClient and SageRecorder as a
network encoder on the second. This will allow either location to view the same library and
to watch live tv from either box. This is my setup and it works well.

If one of the two locations does not need to watch tv or recordings the best bet is
sageTV on the machine you will be watching on and installing sagerecorder as a
network encoder on the second pc..

If they are in the same location and you are putting them in seperate boxes for ir blasters.
then you could just put them both in the machine with the raid and install sagerecorder
as a network encoder on the same box following the same instructions the only difference is
that they are on the same computer and you can cotrol two ir blasters.

hope this helps.

Actually for sagerecorder to work as a network encoder you need to map it as e:

Now I understand a bit better what you
are doing. I personally would setup the main system with sageTV and have the other two systems with sagerecorder and sagetvclient. this will allow you to schedule a recording on any of the 3 systems from any location. The only problem is that you will only be able to watch a previously recorded program or what is being watched on one of three systems, unless it is watching nothing and it was put to sleep by the last user.

If you do not care if you can schedule recordings on the other systems then you can just buy 3 copies of sagetv and configure them independantly each with an ir blaster or serial control and have them record to the mapped 400 GB drive.

hmm. Not sure why I would put SageTV on all 3 computers. SageTV does not record shows right? I know that I have not been able to do so with it. I figured I didn't know how to but it could do it.

So, SageTV does NOT record shows. Is that right? I was led to beleive it did a few weeks ago when I asked before. I would need Sage Recorder to record shows to the hard drive. Thats why there is nothing in GUIDE. I keep looking for recorded shows in GUIDE and its allways empty. The folder where recorded shows are stored

Something's wrong StylinLP.

SageTV-Installed on a PC with a PVR 250 card. It will allow you to watch TV, pause, rewind AND record your shows. Your shows will be recorded on this machine and should show up in the Guide under Sage Recordings. Make sure you have a directory defined in setup where SageTV is suppose to save your recordings.

SageTV Client-install on a PC without a PVR card. (SageTV Client will NOT use a PVR 250 card installed on it.) This will allow you to watch TV on your Client machine from the SageTV machine. (Server) You can schedule recordings from the client but they will be recorded on the Server and show up in the Guide under Sage Recordings.

SageRecorder-install on a PC with a PVR card and do recordings. If you also have a machine with SageTV installed on it. (Server) Then the Server can see this as another tuner card and utilize it for watching and recording. (If you configure according to the documentation.) Another way to use it. On your SageTV Client machine install a PVR250 card. Now install SageRecorder on the same machine. Your SageTV machine (Server) will now see it as another tuner it can use for watching and recording TV.

I hope this helps clear it up.

If your PC has a PVR250 card installed and SageTV installed then when you click to record a show this show should show up in Guide under Sage Recordings when it is finished recording the program. If this is not happening something is definitely wrong.

SageTV Does Record Shows and has an EPG. If you can not record shows I suspect that there is a problem with your configuration.

SageTVClient just lets you use SageTV on a remote computer but can not actually do any recording on the computer it is running on.

SageRecorder Lets you record but does not have an EPG or a GUI.

So basically you should be able to install a copy of SageTV on each computer. Configure the Capture card and the IR Blaster or Serial Control for changing Channels on the Sat Box and use the Remote that came with the Capture card for navigating the GUI.

I don't know if I have confused you more or helped.

So there is two ways to do this I guess. If I have 3 computers. The main computer is a RAID5 with two Hauppauge 250 cards. The other two computers have one 250 card each. If I had a 4tf computer that would not have a pvr250 card in it.

1: Install a full version of SageTV on each of the 3 computers. What would this do for me? I assume this will let me watch 3 seperate channels and record one channel at the same time? Would I have to install Sage Recorder on the server too?

2: Install Full verson of SageTV on the RAID5 computer with the two pvr250 cards.
Install SageTV client and Sage Recorder on the other two machines. If I have a 4th computer with no pvr250 card just install SageTV Client.
what will all this do for me? Wil I be able to watch 3 seperate channels and record a show at the same time?

I don't care what I need to buy to get it done. But I want up to 4 computers playing seperate shows and be able to record a show running in the back ground. How is that best set up with all these programs?
Appreciate the help

For a multi-computer/multi-tuner system you should get the following:

For your server: (main computer is a RAID5 with two Hauppauge 250 cards.) Install SageTV. Enable Server under the advanced tab in Detail Setup.

For your clients: (computers with one 250 card each) Install SageRecorder and SageClient. Setup each of the PVR250's as network encoders using SageRecorder. (see this page for instructions on how to setup a network encoder: http://www.sage.tv/NetworkEncoderSetup.txt) Run SageClient to access the SageTV server and have full access to all SageTV functions and control of all installed PVR250's over your network

For your 4th client without a encoder card installed: Install SageClient to access the SageTV server same as your other client computers for full functionality.

Since you are using Sat Boxs you may need to install SageRecorder on the Server as well since SageTV can only control one ir blaster.
