Frankly I don't really care if the pipelines are locked down, provided the end-user experience is much like now. ie you can still choose decoders, apps can mix and match, etc.

I agree - I hope that is still the case when this rolls around (at this point it sounds like Vista is still a year away now)

I hope at a minimum that third party apps like SageTV can get access to the devices and the pipeline. My fear is that the codecs will have DRM hooks built-in allowing playback from other apps, BUT they will be locked down to the capturing PC or a set # of PCs that have been authorized - similar to how iTunes works.

I'm pesimistic and just don't like the look of the whole thing. If 5c is any taste of it, it's not going to be good. Plus, knowing MS history, they have never failed to seize an opportunity to monopolize. The chance to get their hands 100% wrapped around Hollywood content will be hard for them to pass up; they'll gladly deal with anti-trust legalities later. They gained much more than they lost last round with DOJ (just a timeout in the corner a warning to play nice).

I don't think it will all end at the pipes. I think it's just going to be a glorified version of the DVR STB I can get from my CableCo. Hope I'm wrong.
