Most efficient/best way to burn to DVD

I like to burn a lot of my recorded programs to DVD. At this point, I'm taking the mpeg files and converting them to DVD files via Ulead DVD movie maker.

Is there a better more efficient way to convert to DVD? and one that will maintain the quality of the picture and sound? Or am I on track with how I'm doing things?
