Video decoders for a newbie

Can somebody tell me what settings in the audio/video settings impact the quality of "live" tv watching versus recording programs? Or do all of the settings impact both? I'm trying to figure out the flow of how mpeg decoding works and if I select different decoders for testing them out, should I see a change in video/audio quality while watching live tv or just on my recordings?
Thanks
skenz

LiveTV is a recording, so decoder settings affect it the same as "normal" recordings. It really shouldn't matter if you use LiveTV or a recording to check out decoders.

FYI, as long as you're mucking with settings to improve the PQ: I've used SageTV for 2+ years now. I have a plasma; It took me 2 years to try dScaler with the elecard mpeg decoder.

Literally the second I displayed that image on my screen, my wife turned to me, hit me, and said "Now THIS is what TV is supposed to look like on a plasma - why didn't you do this before?"

From www.dscaler.org:

Quote:
The DScaler project is an ongoing attempt to get the best video quality possible from a Windows PC. At the moment the project has several main strands.

DScaler 4
DScaler 5
DScaler Deinterlacing
DScaler Video Filters

These are explained in more detail below. There are also some old strands

Why do I need DScaler?

Video fed in from external sources is interlaced and if this interlacing is not taken into account when displaying the video on a PC nasty artifacts can often be seen.

Sorry, I have absolutely no idea... rtfm. I'm struggling enough with trying to get SageTV to record a channel into 24 hour long files...

AFAIK, you just install the decoders (Dscaler 5) and pick them in Sage.

I have a standard definition TV (at the moment), can a dscaler offer some advantage for me also?
