Recording HDTV shows to network drive

Is anyone being successful with recording HDTV shows to a network drive? I find that the resulting file has a lot of pixelization, glitches and jerkyness. When I record to a local drive there are no problems. I also have watched the shows with my STB to ensure that the broadcast is not flawed and have not had issues there.

I also find that deleting a file on the network drive takes 10-15 seconds, while on the local drive it is instantaneous. I can delete the file in a windows browser with no issues, just have the delay when deleting with Sage.

Am I stuck using a local drive dedicated to my HDTV tuner?

I'm using a gigabit network with gigabit NICs on both the Sage server and the fileserver. The file server is running Linux and using ReiserFS (sp?) via samba.

thanks,

I setup a fileserver using FC4 and Samba this past week. File transfers were painfully slow no matter what I tweaked in Samba HD recordings were a mess. I ended up changing it to an XP install. HD works great now I'm pretty sure it was a Samba issue and not Linux because FTP was stellar.

You might try a direct firewire connection between the file server and sage machine. Thats what i'd do if i ever decided to setup a nice fat RAID server.

I had a similar set of problems until a few months ago. Shortly thereafter one of the target drives in my RAID set died. I replaced the drive and set both NICs to Force 1000 mbps (not auto-negotiate) and the problems went away.
