XMLTV without network configuration

I am a newbie who recently successfully configured a Sagetv PC do act as a PVR to my TV. I am using an Express Vu 3100 satalite tuner (I am in Canada).

My only regret is that my PC is not networked. Or rather the dedicted PVR PC is not on a network but my other PC is directly connected to a DSL modem. Networking a share to the internet connection is possible but due to the distance of the PVR PC and my home office PC, I would need to teardown alot of Gyproc and make a mess running Cat5 wire. Wifi is something I may have no choice except I am trying to avoid changing over if I can. (I am I Wifi virgin)

So my question is: Can the XMLTV or Zap2it listing services be manually updated periodically from my internet enabled home office PC, save the config file to a USB key and then with the USB key upload the config to the SageTv PVR PC so that the program listing is up to date on the PVR?

I know it sounds like a hassle, but if it is possible and the XMLTV only needs updating every couple of days and only involves a couple mouse clicks, then I prefer that then having to switch to Wifi or running Cat5 cable.

Thank you

The XMLTV files can be done this way.

Just configure and run the XMLTV grabber on the PC with access to the Internet, save the EPGDATA.xlm file to a usb key and the copy the file on the Program Files\SageTV\SageTV directory of your PVR PC.

Thats cool. That'll save alot of fussing around. Just wondering if the same principal applies with Zap2it because I am still researching weather XMLTV is available for Canadian subscription digital satalite.

Also can you recomend a good remote and IR blaster for my Express vu? I am using a standard WDM capture card (an old VHX 98 using bt848) so I don't have the fancy Haugauge pvr 150 with its bundled IR blaster & remote etc.

In fact, one of the reasons I like SageTV is its out of the box ease of installation for a WDM software capture card. On my Athlon XP 3100 I capture at highest mpeg encoding with no perceptible dropped frames- Not bad for a software encoder eh

I use the USBUIRT-56K for my BEV receiver. If you have a DVB card you could grab the EPG data and import it in via XMLTV without a internet connection. It would be much more cheaper to Hook up A Wi-FI if you have speed internet.

I doubt the capture card is DVB standard being 8 years old. (Nevertheless a very nice card which I don't intend to change)

Eventually I'll buy a WAP for Wifi and that'l be that. For now I'll follow Lucas' advice and grap the xmltv and copy via usb key to the SageTv PC directory. Hopefully that will work.

So no ploblems with that remote? Do you also use the Girder plugin? That is the ultimate in remote control. I suppose you able to program the USBUIRT to receive and understand the BEV remote's comands and therefor forward those commands from the SageTv PC to the BEV receiver? Ideally I want to only communicate with the SageTv by Remte and then let Sage TV autotune the BEV.

PS I realize that there is a 250+ post thread dedicated to the USB-UIRT but maybe you can save me 10 hours of reading by telling me what I need to know if I am to use the USB-UIRT.

Thanks.

Also wanted to add: Do I need Girder to train the USB-UIRT or does the built in SageTV support take care of that?

BTW, firstly, you are kind person technazz and I appreciate your help tremendously.

Thanks for the link but the technical stuff in that link seems complicated. That plugin relies on a config file. Is there something simpler for someone who has only one digital satalite channel lineup, no PPV channels. I only want to periodically refresh the XMLTV file without the need for configuration (other that the initial setup). Is there like a 'plugin for dummies'. Or maybe its not all that complicated but I ten to get scared away when I see printouts of config files etc on forum posts.
