Servers / STB's / Saving Space and Heat Issues?
For those of you running Sage on a File Server - share your experiences...
Hello - I now have 4 direct TV D100-10 STB's. I'm wondering if it is okay to stack them on a bookshelf (not in a closed cabinet but the bookshelf is in a wardrobe closet). I'm wondering if the the bottom ones may get too hot and (what is too hot)? I could also place them on their sides instead. I'm wondering what is the best way to go with this since they otherwise could take up a lot of space. Also - I'm thinking my file server AMD 3800 / X2 is okay to have in my wardrobe closet as well - it does not seem to get hot in the back and there is some space between the back and the wall and the case also has a fan to blow CPU heat out of the side of the case. Any thoughts on this? We are talking about how we all manage our space in our homes with a file server and all the STB's in one place (not to mention all the cables - not easy to keep all that stuff nice and neat). Thanks, Mike |

I have 3 SA stbs stacked on top of my vcr... You could burn yourself on them almost.
I just put in place some spacers between them to allow more air flow, but they are still very hot. Locked inside a wardrobe with a server would be a sketchy situation I think. |

Wheemer - the AMD's do run cool and I can say that everything feels fairly cool as far as the server goes so I'm hopeful. But, regarding the STB's if yours are that hot then the question is whether it may shorten the life of them. Perhaps they are built to run that hot considering a lot of people probably have a VCR or Tivo stacked on them or perhaps they are also in confined areas like an entertainment center.
Either way - Direct TV just started leasing all equipment so in some ways it's a plus if it breaks in that you don't have to pay for a new STB. Mike |
