This is certainly interesting, but IMHO the problem has never been that technologically it couldn't be done. Just politics. I suspect politics would be the showstopper for a device like this in the US as well.

Yeah, but what's interesting about this is twofold:
1) It's cheap, <$300, vs about $1500 for anything else with similar capabilities.
2) "Reasonable" recording size. 30-40GB/hour isn't anything to sneeze at, but it's much better that 600GB/hr uncompressed.

It will be interesting to see if you can even buy one in the states or not. It appears to be COD only in Japan, and right now, only to PV2 owners or those with a "coupon".

I agree Stanger, the price is certainly right and the capability looks good on paper. I'm just tired of getting my hopes up in this whole HD thang!

I'm not really expecting it to be very usefull either...

I've contemplated the possibility of "ripping" HD-DVDs or Blu-ray's with it, but it's too much work. And without software support, it's useless for PVR-ing.
