Just got my DTV D10 Remote controlling my MVP!

I was a bit unhappy with the 34 button remote that I got with my new MVP so i started playing with other remotes. Finally I tried my DirecTV D10 remote and it works! Now to start linking commands!

For anyone that wants to know how I did it:

I went into Detailed Setup -> Commands -> Link Infared/keystroke...

Then I just selected anything to link a command to so it would bring up the window waiting for a command to be entered. (You can just unlink it afterwords if it gets linked wrong)

Then I did a code search until the mvp responded to something. (window went away)

Now it's just a matter of using the MVP remote to navigate the menu until it's done linking codes!

I'd bet that this would work with a lot of different universal remotes - it's just trial and error...

Anywho - just figured I'd post this since I saw some interest in using a different remote. Still wish I could use an mce remote, they're sooo pretty

were you able to figure out which code it was that worked? Or--approximately how many codes you cad to search through until it worked? Thanks--i might try this out because the older hauppauge remote is a little limiting...

I did do a code replay and it came back with code 21111. Funny thing is if i specifically put this code in it doesn't work.

thanks....what button were you using on the directv remote to test this out. I think only a few are supported like power, up, down for testing (i could be mixing this up with my tv's remote though) and i don't want to sit there going through the codes if i'm pressing the wrong button...Thanks!

edit: One more---AND--if I totally mess this up is there a way to go back to the default Hauppauge controlls?

As it turns out I may have jumped the gun suggesting that remote. It seems that the Left/Right and Guide buttons cannot be reassigned from the DTV code. I've got basically every button except those three working, but without those three it's pretty useless. I'm not positive about this so i'll be testing out some other codes and let ya know how it turns out. I was just using the channel up button to test it.

Just so you know... all you are doing is assigning extra IR codes to commands; you are not removing the codes for the original remote... unless you happen to unlink them, or unless you use the same codes on another remote & reassigned them.

The remote & IR receiver are essentially the same as from the PVR-250, so you just need to use any code that uses the RC5 protocol... since that is a Philips code set, you can start the trial & error efforts by first trying the Philips device codes on a universal type of remote - probably VCR devices. (About the only difference replacing the MVP remote vs. the one for a tuner card, is that there is no irremote.ini file to deal with.)
