Use SageTV to Watch Line-In ?
I would like to use SageTV to watch Line-In.
My thought is that this would be an easy way to play a videotape on my VCR, watch it via SageTV, and then record to my hard drive what I'm watching "live." Does this make sense? And if so, does anyone know how to configure SageTV to watch Line-In as "live" ? Thanks. |

Cleveland1,
If I understand you correctly...then to do what you want.. You can hook up your VCR video output to either one of your composite or S-Video inputs on your capture card (assuming you are not already using them). The audio from the VCR will also need to be input to the capture card (either RCA or 1/8" mini stereo jack - depending on your card). Then in SageTV, you can set up an additional capture device/source for those inputs on the capture card. You will not need (or want) to set up programming data for that capture source. A channel will be added to your guide data (probably ch1 by default if there is not one already). You can then select that channel in the guide in order to view anything playing on your VCR. You will also be able to set up timed recordings for that channel. All of this assumes there is not macrovision protection on what you are trying to watch from the VCR. Let me know if this is not clear enough. |

Thanks...
Para,
Thanks so much for the excellent and most complete answer. I'm going to give it a try. FYI, not worried about copyright issues - the intent here is to more easily transfer old family videos to the hard drive for editing and burning to a disk. |
