Sage 4 crashes when running all day
I've been using Sage 4 for the last few weeks on a new 2.8 Intel-based system with a nVidia-based 6600 video card (I used Sage 2 for about 18 months). Sage 4 never crashed when I would just run it at night. Lately, I've started leaving my system on all day. The system now crashes sometime between watching shows one night and trying to watch shows the next night. I have to reboot the computer to get Sage working again. The odd part is that usually Sage tries to work and accepts a few remote controls then quits accepting commands. I then try the mouse and it works on one or two clicks then it quits. Then the system is totally stuck. Sometimes a popup box announces a failure. Last night, Sage would not return to full functionality until I rebooted the system twice in succession.
This system is dedicated to Sage. It consists of one computer with a minimum of other applications running: Sage, ZoneAlarm, Girder, and the Santa Cruz sound card software -- no antivirus or spyware detectors. The system is never used for email, and I've optimized it to turn off things such as Windows autoupdate, instant messaging, etc. I've tried the official and beta releases of Sage. Help! The WAF has gone to zero! Thanks, Steve |

What Java version are you using. I was using the most recent version, and I would experience almost daily crashes as well. I went back to using the version that comes with sage (1.4.6 I think), and it has been running pretty well. To go back to the Sage version I backed up my Sage folder. uninstalled all versions of java, uninstalled sage tv (rebooting as necessary). I then installed sage 4. When sage does not detect java on the computer, it automatically starts installing the version of Java included with the download. After sage installed, I copied the backup of the sage folder on top of the new installation.

I did revert to JRE2 1.4.2 previously because of other problems. I uninstalled Java and installed the Sage Java version while Sage was shut down (not just asleep). I haven't reinstalled Sage again though (I did reinstall it a couple of weeks back before the Java change). I guess I'll try that -- sigh. Sage 4 has been a real pain.

Like DFranch above I had the latest version of Java installed (1.5 update 6) and was having daily crashes. I ununistalled and re-installed the old 1.4x version and have not had a crash in a week and a half.
One other thing, do you have FSE enabled? If so I'd disable this, it's a bit picky. |

Thanks for the feedback. I am running in overlay mode. VMR9 and FSE caused stuttering. Did you reinstall Sage when you reverted to the old Java?

^ I dont know about everyone else but I reinstalled Sage (then restored Wiz.BIN and Sage.PROPERTIES) after I uninstalled Java V1.5.X and reinstalled V1.4.X, just in case. Havent had any issues since.

I uninstalled Sage and Java then reinstalled Sage which added back its version of Java. I relaid the backed up Sage folder over the new folder like DFranch did. The system has only run for a few hours so I don't know if it will crash before tomorrow night.
However, Sage crashed tonight while I tried to view a live show while recording another show (my system has two Vbox digital tuners). The live show stumbled badly so I stopped it. Sage then refused to respond to commands. This has happened off and on before. The myriad of issues that cause Sage to crash is really frustrating. |

After you uninstalled all versions of Java did you delete all the directories under \Program Files\Java ?

Downgrading Java worked for me.
Make sure you go into the control panel and disable the java auto update. |

The daily crashing issue may be over. My system has run for two days without crashing sometime during the day. The final fix seems to have been uninstalling Sage and Java then reinstalling Sage with its version of Java and overlaying the previous installation's Sage folder over the newly created folder. I stayed away from other issues such as watching a live show. The other issues are still lurking but maybe this one is gone.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions! Steve |
