Utility for monitoring HDD health

Hi,

Anyone have a recommendation here. I need something that will give me a heads up if one of my drives starts to go south. I just cannot justify a raid 5 array so I'm just gonna try and dodge all the bullets.

TIA

Jesse

Modern hard drives have this built in. It's called SMART Status (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology). It needs to be supported by and enabled in the bios. It's a feature that is almost always disabled by default in the bios (not sure why).

I haven't used it, but Active Smart looks pretty nice. http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/s...echnology.html

Though if you just want something to look at once in a while you can just download the WD tool and it will give you the status for free.

I've noticed that SMART does not work for USB-attached drives

hdd health is completely free and works well....I put it on every pc I have; don't know why this isn't built into windows. It will give you prediction dates for failure.
