Slo-Mo playback - why? Fix?
About once a week, when we commence playing a recorded show, the sound and picture are at slo-mo speeds - like 1/2 normal. The sound is a like record or tape playing at the wrong speed. I hope it doesn't happen when we have visitors and I'm "showing off" my free TiVo-alike. Based on feedback from this posting, I'll later file this as a Reported Bug.
Tonight, it happened again. But this time, unlike previous times, it was hard to get it out of the slo-mo playback mode. Here's what we tried: 1. Stop and restart the intended program several times. 2. Choose a different program recorded on a different day. 3. Switch to live TV, the recorded delay was correct (not slo-mo) 4. Then try a recorded file- still wrong. 5. Try (2), after 3-4 tries, it did playback normally (slo-mo mode gone). 6. Try the original program - worked OK. This sounds like a SageTV software bug to me. Sorry, it doesn't reproduce predictably. ------------ SageTV 4.1.3 licensed. Client was inactive. During this playback, no recording was in process. Playback on server side. Win XP Pro 512M RAM AMD2400 ATI PCI bus video card. Hauppauge PVR USB2. Last edited by stevech; 02-11-2006 at 08:58 PM. |

Are you using the powerdvd decoder for video or audio? I've had it happen a few times on my client which uses powerdvd, but the server was using intervideo for a year and no issues....I just tried powerdvd and had the same thing happen on the server. The intervideo decoder seems to have no sound every once and a while instead of slo-mo. I was hoping the powerdvd would be better, but slo mo is far more annoying...now I'm trying the sage audio decoder with intervideo non-css video to see what happens.

No, I'm using the SageTV decoder that came with the distribution.
I have a plain vanilla setup. The recordings are OK, it's a playback issue. This is now happening very frequently - the family is upset. I'll have to press SageTV tech support for a solution. |

Steve,
I have the same problem that you are describing. I have tried switching between the include Sage decoders, Nvidia decoders, and Cyberlink decoders - all seem to do it and as you said, it's hard to reproduce. It seems to happen to me about once every other day. Sometimes more, sometimes less. -Chris

If you too see the slo-mo problem, please, I beg, write it up in the trouble report section so I'm not the lone wolf.
Today the problem is back again in spades. SageTV made the recordings and has trouble playing them back- slo-mo video and 1/2 or 1/4 speed audio. Family is livid. It sometimes starts working again if you try playing different recordings over and over and suddenly it'll work. For a while. I successfullly used Windows Media Player with files that SageTV won't reliably replay. This didn't happen often in the first few weeks I had SageTV. Now it's common - happens every time we go to use SageTV for playbacks - I'm about 6 weeks into owning it. Made no hardware changes. Rebooting PC doesn't help. I use SageTV vanilla right out of the box. I sure hope tech support responds with a thoughtful response and cures this. Otherwise, I just can't use it due to the SageTV bug. Steve,
I just submitted a support request for this problem. I would have done it earlier, but this problem doesn't affect me as much as the "exit to desktop" bug that I also suffer from. It's a shame because, other than these 2 bugs, Sage is spectacular. -Chris

Intermediate Slo-Mo for me too
I have a similar problem: Every other day or so, the video and audio get out of sync for a few moments. The video will stop and then speed up to get back in sync. Once a week or so, I get the slo-mo effect. both the audio and video are noticably slowed and often halt.
At first I thought it was a hard drive beginning to fail (I have 5 drives 120 boot, 200 int, 200 int, 160 ext, 160 ext) but I ran check disk several times with no reported problems. I'm using the "Basic" set up in the wizard with "Default" audio/video decoders. The server is dedicated and has only the McAffee virus scanner installed. Nvidia DVI card. --tim

Hi,
I get the slo-mo every few days. Nvidia decoder. I think I'm just gonna put buttons on the remote to reboot sage as that always seems to cure it. Jesse |

Jesse
Would you please file a formal trouble report on this? |

Follow-up to the below...
Today the slo-mo happened again. Same symptoms: it began when a routine playback of a recording began. Then as usual, choosing other recordings and even live TV yielded all in slo-mo video and audio. Today I did something different to effect a cure: Went to setup video and told it to "Reload Media Player". The slo-mo problem stopped. HOWEVER, this may be a coincidence. Hopefully this is a useful clue to SageTV's develolpers. --------- Quote:

Hi,
Something interesting: I never paid attention before, but I have noticed that the last two times I got the slo-mo issue it was after playing back a ripped DVD using sage. I am going to try it a couple of more times to see if it is repeatable before filing with sage support. I may also try disabling FSE as I have heard it can cause all sorts of general weirdness. Anyone else notice it happening after DVD playback? Jesse |

My slo-mo playbacks happen just as I playback a standard recording. I don't playback DVD.
As I reported to SageTV, the last time I got stuck in the everything's slo-mo situation, I did a "Reload Media Player" and at least for this one time, the slo-mo stopped happening. |

Hi,
Anyone know if this has been resolved? I am still using 4.1.6.75 and I have found the problem to be easily repeatable. If I play back a ripped DVD then all sage recordings play in Slo-Mo until I entirely exit (not sleep) sage and then re-start it. Anyone know if this has been cured in V5? TIA Jesse |
