Am I correct in that this is a possibility now? Can I buy another copy of Sage TV, put 3 tuner cards in a PC, install Server, put this thing down stairs and then my little HTPC upstairs will run the interface and schedule?
Can I also have the Server downstairs keep all the recordings on its harddrive and then have the Server upstairs manage the files and stream them from the one downstairs. Which server should my MVP talk too? Is it possible to have the MVP(s) contact the server downstairs and get the files it wants directly from that server instead of creating a loop? Thanks for the help. Last edited by KJake; 02-02-2006 at 09:31 AM. |

It's not very clear what you already have but this is how I understand that multiple Sage servers work.
Server1 is the master server. All clients are set up to initially connect here. It merges all necessary data (Guide data for example) for both servers and provides a unified data source for the clients. It contains x number of tuner cards. Server2 is the slave server/network encoder. It contains y number of tuner cards. Both servers can be setup to record from local tuners to only local drives or they can be set up to share drives across the network. 1st option would usually be the best. All clients are set up to connect to server1. If a client requests a recording that is stored on server1 then server1 streams the data to the client but if the client requests a recording that is stored on server2 then the client makes a temporary connection to server2 who then streams the data to the client. |

Sorry sleonard, you're right, I should have been more specific. I just didn't want to include too many details and scare someone.
Here's my current setup... 1 Server /w 1 tuner 1 Network Encoder via SageRecorder /w 1 tuner 1 MVP using Sage server (not Matt's client) I was thinking about setting up another server, so my setup would be like so... 1 Server /w no tuners (master) 1 Server /w 3 turners (slave) 1 MVP My hope is that the first server would be my viewer and master controller of all things PVR, but then the second server would record and serve up all files. Being that the second server would be doing all the recording, I'd think that it should record to its local drive(s). The reason I want to keep the first server around is that I may want to do some HD recording via Firewire with that computer at some point. Does that all make a little more sense, or am I completely wrong on how this works? Thanks! |

I have to say that I have never configured a network encoder, but you are supposed to be able to do so fairly easily. v4.1.6 even has a new property/ability to say where encoders can store their recordings, so you could give a prefix that leads only to local drives for the tuners.
You could always set up the single server & use the other as a client, even if it does run a full copy of SageTV. Then, if you ever do add firewire recording, you could make that one the network encoder. Either way, it should work, from what I understand. - Andy

cool, I was pretty sure of it too. it may not work exactly they way i want, but i get the jist of it and it sounds like it will do what i want for the most part.
first, i must replace some fans and/or power supply in my soon-to-be second server... |
