I found that installing the latest version of directX helped quite a bit.
EDIT: I'm running the April 2006 version.

Hi,
I am gonna try the latest directx, but I am sceptical. I too have the black screen thing, and yes, I am using an ATI card. It started when I upgraded from one of the V4 betas to the current V5 release version. After forwarding some logs to the sage beta bug folks they informed me that this was a known "Hardware acceleration" bug and that it would be fixed in V5.1. They made no mention of it being specific (or more prevalent) with ATI cards, but I am pretty sure that is the case. My main and client machines are almost identical, except for the vid cards. The client uses a 6600GT and never experiences the black screen issue. I had the main machine working ok with overlay and no hardware acceleration. DVD's were not so hot so I tried activating hardware accel and VMR9 and I was good. The other day I had brain fade and activated FSE. Bam--black screen. I am tired of waiting for V5.1 but dont want to buy another 6600GT with rumours of a 7600GT agp card in the near future. Guess I will be waiting either way. Jesse |

Wow--the DX9 redistributable that is linked above is huge! Any reason I need that monster instead of just the smaller end user runtime? (Here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
If I need the entire redistributable how do I correctly install/configure it? TIA Jesse |

That's the web installer which will go out and grab the big one anyway. It just happens over the web.
