Firewire HD recording w/client-server only
Hi All,
I am going to attempt the firewire <> hd-cable-box setup, I currently have a "server only system" with a 1Ghz P3 RAID 1TB server and 3G P4-HT clients. Is the extra CPU horsepower only needed for playback or can I keep my p3 as a server? As a second question is firewire going to be supported (directly) by Frey in the future or will it remain a user "added on" set up as discribed by spaceghost's document? Thirdly can you buy the firewire cable boxes, or do you always rent them (I am in a comcast area)? TTFN & Thanks in advance, Pete |

As far as I've seen, the firewire captures don't use much CPU power (at least with the graph that goes straight from the box to a dump as a TS file anyway). The extra CPU is for the playback-end. I have 3 tuners in my PC that captures via firewire (it's the 4th), and 2 tuners in another PC, and as far as recording & processor time, the system uses very little (it's a P4 1.4).
Firewire is included in the Linux version of Sage, but as far as I know it's un-supported at this time. I also going to bet you'd have to get the HD boxes from your provider, they usually won't let you use a foreign box on their system (by foreign, I mean not provided by them).
