Why is the Nvidia decoder recommended?

I find it stutters, it has uneven playback, even though the frame rate is 30-50 according to FRAPS. Ignoring the stutters I can hardly see a difference in the picture. I was going to purchase it after all the high praise, but I can't find a reason why now. what am I doing wrong?

4400+
7800GT
2GB RAM
etc...

No idea why you'd be getting all kinds of stuttering. I've got it running on a lot lower spec system than yours.

But I think it's mostly better for higher resolutions like on high-def tv's because it's deinterlacer and scaler is better than the others that come with sage. I noticed a huge difference in quality on my system when I switched.

Maybe the desktop resolution is the problem? I'm running Sage at 1920x1080, maybe the GPU is choking? But like I said the FPS is fine, it just seems to stutter.

Do you have anitvirus installed?

I had the same experience until I uninstalled my Anti Virus.

What is weird is that with SageTV Decoder / NVDVD 2.55 it did not stutter, but for some reason the anti virus was causing problems with playback.

I do not use FSE.

I have Norton AV installed, maybe I can kill it and test it.

I had Norton as well when I had the problem. Just Turning off Realtime Virus protection did not seem to do it, but since I don't really need it on that box anymore I uninstalled it and things are better.

I would try FSE with VMR9.

I don't know about the 7800GT, but for most all of the other Nvidia cards you pretty much need to use FSE if you're going to run at 1080i using VMR9. You can probably do 720p using VMR9 or Overlay at 1080i without FSE.

Everytime I see FSE mentioned around here it looks negative. What does it do, lock the CPU for the GUI? If Sage is in sleep mode in the taskbar, will FSE interfer with gaming? Anything else about FSE that I should know?

It does exactly the same thing a game does.

Shouldn't.

If you can get it to work (still does not work for me).

I run at 1776 x 1000 (recommended resolution by ATI). I have an Athlon 64 3700+, 9600XT, 1GB RAM. I run it all the time with no stuttering or any problems to speak of, so even though FSE doesn't work for me, it doesn't seem to be a problem for me.

For me it seems to work with every other SageTV release! But quite frankly, I don't notice a performance difference when it does work.

You're running an ATI card, they don't seem to have the same problem with VMR9 and 1080i that the Nvidia cards have.

I just installed nVidia pure video decoder and it seems to be more stable than Power DVD.
For the stuttering problem, set NAV to not scan folders where are your video files.

If you don't mind me asking, what is FSE and how do you turn it on?
