now I've uninstalled the hauppauge software, rebooted and sage is still not running to the extender... it now sits at "contacting mvp bootserver" forever.

ok, more limited success.

after rebooting the server machine, I saw that the sage splash screen appeared on the MVP. then I got audio for about 5 seconds... then the screen turned green and stayed green for about 2 minutes... then it turned black.

I killed sage and restarted it on the server, then i rebooted the MVP... this time I got spalsh screen from sage again, but no audio and immediate black screen. It also said there was some playback error in a sage dialog.

I once again killed sage, restarted it, rebooted the MVP... this time sage came up! sort of. It is very jerky picture, like stuttering. almost as if there isnt enough bandwidth or something. is 10mb half duplex not enough? maybe it's because I am using VMR9 and transparency on the server? I dont know.

god I thought this built in mvp support was going to be the holy grail... and I would finally get WAF for it

okay, well--glad the 10 half duplex thing worked for a bit--it is a start (and there should be no reason that you have to do this and it does suck that some people do have to drop their network speeds-makes no sense)

I would say start from scratch. Turn off the MVP extender option in Sage. Install the Hauppauge software and see if it connects. If it does--uninstall everything and double check that nothing is running--i think there are 3 programs that launch when you run the Hauppauge software. Once nothing is running--enable the MVP extender in sage, unplug the MVP for 5 seconds and plug it in---see what happens.

I don't know why you were able to get it to connect once but not again. I did have similar issues when i first started using Matt's plugin but dropping the network down to 10 fixed it.
Good luck

okay--we posted at the same time--

i am not sure how the default settings work for the MVP-if they just mimic the server settings at first. But you definately need to try overlay. If you can't get into the MVP settings switch your server settings and see what happens--i think this is the problem now. And 10 half duplex is enough--been using if for a month or so and no stuttering.

I'm almost in the same boat here..

Except mine loads the app and starts the app and I get NO UI at all. If I poke around on the MVP remote I can start something playing on the server [judging by the REC icon]. However I don't have video or sound or much of anything. Geez I don't want to climb back behind the bedroom TV to hook the client back up. I just knew this would be an "easy" upgrade!

i've downloaded the new java... but havent installed it yet... past experience, this has messed my sage up.

but i did reboot the MVP... and now it isnt stuttering... very weird... i guess this is the initial release though.

I hope it isnt going to be "you need to use rev XYZ of the MVP for full support"... that will be a bummer... mine is a D3A.

I also just found out something I didnt know. I always thought the sage icon in my systray was indicative of the sage service running... but this is not so at all! the service runs even if you kill sage from the tray.
probably the best way to ensure smooth operation is to actually kill the service, tweak, and then restart the service... I have only been killing sage frmo the systray thinking that is killing the service but it isnt... as I just went upstaris and saw sage still running on the MVP, showing live tv, even after I exiteed sage from the systray.

I'm on D3A too... I actually got the UI to show up once!! Totally unresponsive and locked! Can't get it to show up again!

Just so you know: I've got Rev D3A too & it runs w/o problems. (I don't know what else to suggest, though.)

Someone asked about the ports used for the MVP: that info was posted in this FAQ yesterday.

well after 100 reboots (not an exaggeration, and swapping the STV to SageMC) its up and working, but I'm afraid to reboot it again. Not super responsive, but TV works well. I don't believe swapping the STV helped any it failed to start just as many times. Maybe an update will improve it. It really needs to support divx/ripped DVDs, but it is what it is at this point.

mongoose, what ever got it working for you? Was it just continuous rebooting and it finally worked?

i think rebooting helps, because in that case the sage service is restarted and or killed during the process... and I think that is key to getting it going.

Mine is running great all afternoon... I am super impressed with it, and I think it will also get better as time goes on.

I turned off the fading menu effect, and transparent menus, and instead now use the little preview window... it makes the UI run faster.

I amy have to pick up a few more MVPs!!! amazing.
I may now invest in a headless sage box, and free my regular pc up as PVR.

Frey, I hope you continue to improve this new functionality. It's great so far.

oh PS

I upgraded my java just for fun... and no, I haven't tried setting my networks speed back up, but I may... it's just that you have to go through so many reboots!

I also havent turned xp firewall back on...

and Opus, I had all those ports in the firewall previosuly without luck... but maybe at that time it was link speed that was causing problem...

thats the trouble with not doign a disciplined experiment i guess.

JUC I have no real idea... I sat and stared at the really really really hard..., and rebooted while standing on my head, and the UI appeard. Like I said I'm scared to reboot tho. Might not get it back. True clients (PC) are still the way to go, but I might invest the $30 bucks. Sage has done me right on upgrades in the past. I can't complain too much!

Are the ports open in your router/switch? Have you checked the log on the router/switch? Are you using a single router on your network?

I went into the Control Panel/Security Center/Windows Firewall/Exceptions

Then added all the ports listed below, and everything is now working.

Q: What ports do I need to open in my firewall for using the Hauppauge MediaMVP as a SageTV Media Extender?

A: Several...

The following ports are used for the MVP as a Media Extender:

* UDP:
o 16867 (for booting the MVP)
o 16869 (for booting the MVP)
o 31100 (for discovering the SageTV server after boot)
* TCP:
o 31097 (media)
o 31098 (input)
o 31099 (UI)

Thanks.
