Sage client question.

I am thinking about putting 2 hd cards in my basement computer (headless system).

Can I install Sage client on my main pc upstairs (without any tuner card) and still watch live tv or recorded shows via the networked computer? Do I need Sage client to do this or can I just install my version of Sage 4 on both computer since the one computer is not even connected to a monitor.

Thanks,
Chad

Yes, that is the whole point of the client -- connect to the server & watch recordings from it. (Live TV is still a recording.)

Whether you use SageTV + SageTV Client, or 2 installations of SageTV w/one acting as a client, you will still need 2 separate licenses. Unless you need a network encoder (a tuner on the client PC), I would get SageTV + a client.

Good, point about the encoder. I was thinking I would not need it but, I think I am using it to play my .ts files via the encoder on the card now. I have a p4 2.4 with a gig of memory, but I am not sure how it will play without the card in it. I saw that Sage recomends p3 3g or higher for hd via a software encoder. Guess I will have to do some testing.
Thanks, Chad

If you've got a MyHD, it won't work with Sage. And for playback, Sage doesn't use the tuner at all, you don't need one in the same PC. I think you're getting encoding and decoding confused. HD, with a good video card, will work fine on a 2.4 P4.

This has me thinking... I want to add another client to my home. I was thinking about just adding the client software, but I also have a USB2 device hooked up to this computer . So, maybe I could install Full SageTV instead to utilize the extra tuner. But my question is: Can I set the tuner merit on this to be last on the server but be first on the Client? I would only want it used for LiveTV on the Client. And if so, would LiveTV record from the client to the Server and then be transporrted back to the Client?

In Short: I would like a Client with one tuner attached be intergrated with my Main SageTV Server but use the one client tuner for LiveTV and NOT stream it back & forth.

Will two Full versions of SageTV accomplish this?

You're still going to stream back and forth. Put all the tuners in the server.
