dvd aspect ratio

Is it possible to easily have Sage output an anamorphic picture?

I have a Sony SDTV that has a 4x3 aspect ratio. I watch tv in 4x3, which fills the screen. But the TV has a menu function that 'compresses' the scan lines, so that they display as though the tv was 16x9.

My stand alone DVD player thinks I have a 16x9 tv, and when I play a DVD, it is displayed stretched to fill the 4x3 screen. Then I activate the 16x9 menu and the picture looks better (denser scan line), and is 16x9. Of course the picture is smaller, but I prefer to see the entire movie frame.

But Sage refuses to display an anamorphic image so that I can compress it with the TV. Is there a way to make it do this?

Tried that

Fill, 4x3, Source all give the same result - a letterboxed frame with 'purple' bars. If I set it to 16x9, the bars turn black - other wise no difference.

Then I see two probabilities, either your source isn't anamorphic, or your TV is detecting it somehow and doing it's own squeaze. Does the OSD remain in the picture (not the black bars) when you set the AR to "Fill"?

Yeah - the possibility that I wasn't testing with an anamorphic source led me to test again this AM - still happens with a definate anamorphic source.

Regardless of AR setting, the OSD takes up the full screen height, etc.

The TV isn't doing the squeeze unless I tell it to.

Could this have someting to do with my video card drivers and the TV out? I'm using a GF3 with older set of detonator drivers that work with my TV out (new ones don't), I have messed with TVTool in the past and powerstrip as well. I'm also using the NV decoders - related?
