You gentelmen got it correct. I was confusing overscan with Aspect Ratio. In addition, I didn't realize that modify Aspect Ratio only affect the currently selected aspect ratio. I assumed it was universal, so if I set my vertical to 133%, 4x3 was going to be stretched. This was exactly what I needed. Thanks to all involved.

Good idea, but if you used SA you would also be commercial detecting your imported video's,,, maybe not so desireable. Still though, analyzing the video may be the best way to determine the AR. Maybe Jere could make a new application that would analyze the file and make a filename.AR file (or something) that would contain the aspect ratio settings. Aspect Ratio Analyzer. ARA.exe

This is all so frustrating, I think we should be able to tell sage that we have a 4:3 set or a 16:9 set and maybe opt to fill black bars or not and it should just work.

My problem is with imported video's, but as neilm says it doesn't work so well as they may be of any given AR. Maybe a feature of this plug-in should include AR settings based on a specific subfolder name contained in our imported video's directory. For now I have set shortcuts on my keyboard to toggle the AR. I have no more free buttons on my remote.

Neilm,
I posted in Jere's thread about this topic of detecting the aspect ratio, and he is repsonsive and is willing to work on it if someone will do the stvi development. I'm no programer, but I know some here are. hint. hint. hint.

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...&postcount=522

He said that much of the information about aspect ratio is already collected by SA and it should be easy to implement. He said to just PM him about how to get started.

Ok, I have the new TV now and WOW what a difference. 1080p is something else. I can actually read text on the screen. Now I truely appreciate automatic aspect ratio switching. Looking forward to updates and integration with SA.

I imported the aspect ratio plug-in, and it works, but now I don't see the options to change the default commercial advace setting (enabled vs disabled) from the options menu when watching a recording. I have some movies that were commercial detected that I don't want it to advance on, etc.

Did the aspect ratio settings replace this item on the options list, or did I import something incorrectly?

Should I try to re-import the commercial skipping stvi?

That choice disappeared from my options menu as well. I haven't looked into the cause yet but I am also using both the CS STVi and the AR STVi.

In addition the AR STVi doesn't work and auto skipping commercial blocks sometime doesn't work for a recording as well. I am using the latest Sage beta.

I am going to try to go back to the default Sage3.xml and re-import everything again tonight.

The comskip options disappeared for me as well after installing this plugin. Other than that everything works great.

When using this plugin, it makes my channel changing very slow.

When I channel up/down, it takes a second to do an aspect change. Is there a more optimal configuration that would not slow down the system on channel changes?

From reading the thread, it doesn't appear that others are having this one.

Neilm,
Would it be possible to make an automatic video/audio codec switching plug-in? Maybe automatic overlay/vmr9 swithcher too? I have read that some codecs and decoders work better than others for certain media types or even media recorded on different channels.

It seems sometimes like when find a setting you like, it negatively effects another scenario. I feel like im playing "whack a mole" switching settings back and forth some times.

This would be a great thing.

work with MVP ?

Does this aspect selection work over the MVP.
All the 16x9 video out of my MVP was comming out 4x3 with cropped edges. Will this plugin correct this ?
Does anybody know of another workaround to get 16x9 tele working across the MVP without loosing 1/3 of the picture ?

Regards

Is there any way to disable the popup for this plugin that shows what aspect ratio is selected at the beginning of every video or aspect change?? I woiuld much rather it stay hidden all the time and just have the option of going in and changing the ratios when I want.

Look under the customization settings for the automatic switcher in the detailed setup and disable debugging.

This would be awesome.... personally I would like a non-linear stretch option in the aspect ratios for 4x3 content. FFDshow supports this in the decoder settings, but it is for ALL content.

So, if we could make a automatic Decoder switcher that works in conjuction with or the same as the aspect ratio switcher, I could have ffdshow handle the non-linear stretch for shows I would like handled that way, and then have it switch to a standard decoder for the other aspect ratios.

Maybe a submenu, that says for Aspect Ratio X use Video Decoder Y

Does STV Import support automatic aspect ratio control based on the aspect ratio of the content?

I have a 4:3 monitor. I'd like 4:3 content to be displayed full-screen. I'd like 16:9 content to be letterboxed, or cropped & zoomed to fill the screen, selectable with the remote.

The same logic could be applied to other aspect ratio monitors, e.g. 16:10 or 15:9. (actually these last two are close enough to 16:9 that I would probably choose to always crop 16:9 content, instead of having the choice to letterbox)

I should add that in all cases I want the picture to be undistorted. That is, any scaling must be equal in the horizontal and vertical dimensions.

No, you set the default aspect ratio you want to use. Then for the shows that you don't want using the default, you manually setup the aspect ratio you want for each show. You can set it up by show title, channel, and tuner. Then it automatically switches the aspect ratio whenever you watch one of the those shows.

If the AR is encoded in the MPG file (eg for dvd's and digital recordings), and if the decode supports it, and if your display pixels are 'square', the 'Source' AR will correctly scale 4x3 and 16x9 content, with top/botton or left/right black bars depending on your display AR.. This is a core function of the MPEG2 decoders and Windows, and does not require this plugin...
