Checking just to make sure...

I am a current user of 2.2.8. Just purchased and downloaded v4.0. I'm totally going to re-do my HTPC setup - this is going to be on a brand new machine. If I were to install v4.0 on top of the existing 2.2.8 on the original HTPC then do a fresh install on this new HTPC of just 4.0, can I copy and paste the whole install directory from the original (now 4.0 after I do the upgrade) HTPC to this NEW HTPC via my LAN and expect to have all of my favorites, recordings and settings intact and valid on the new machine?

I'm trying to figure out a way to make my new HTPC have all the same favorites and recordings as my original/current HTPC (after which I will decommission).

Any ideas?

Not sure, but I think you'd have to make sure your recordings directory had the same path on the new machine, and you'd have to copy those contents over too.

I'd like to do the same thing. I don't want to take down my 2.2.8 server until I have a 4.0 server up and running.

Is it "OK" and possible to copy my recordings and config, then install 4.0 on my new machine, get it up and running before decommissioning my old machine. My old machine will be reconfigured as a client.

Well I'm about to start this process in about 30 minutes or so. I have till 8 because at that time I need to start recording stuff again. :-) I'm going to try install 4.0 on top of my 2.2.8 (do the upgrade), install 4.0 on my new HTPC machine then copy from the upgraded 4.0 to the fresh install 4.0 machine.

This FAQ entry talks aout switching computers near the end of that post.

There is no need to copy the entire SageTV installation directory & you probably don't really want to do so. I don't think you'll want to copy your properties file, since you want the configuration to be set up for the new PC, not the old one. You will want to copy the original wiz.bin, though, and such things as your channel logos or other customization files.

When you said "current user of 2.2.8" did you mean licensed 2.2.8 user? If so you didn't need to purchase v4, it's a FREE upgrade! Just download the same as someone downloading trial version, your current keys will work. If installing over the top don't even need to enter keys.

WHAT?!~ I just spent 70 some dollars on a FREE upgrade? Ugh. The wife isn't going to like that. Yes, I purchased version 2.2 on PCAlchemy some time ago. Oh man! Where was that post telling us that v4 is a free upgrade? I'm so used to living in a "Microsoft-World" where everything with a title revision or version increase costs you something.

Thanks for the info.

Send an e-mail to Sage. If you have proof that you were a lisenced v2 user they may issue you a refund. Don't take my word on it though... I'm just speculating since Sage's customer support is pretty good.

There have been numerous posts discussing upgrade cost and it being free. Maybe Opus4 can add upgrade "pricing" info' to the FAQ...

Talking Oh well.

What would be helpful is if somewhere along the order process on the main SageTV site, it would say something along the lines of a free upgrade for existing, licensed SageTV 2.0 users. Not just have a "Buy It Now" option. Sure, technically it's the same thing; you're getting the product via a download, but a little more advertisement of it being a free download for licensed users would be nice and not to have that little detail hidden away in an FAQ.

Call me odd, but I only read an FAQ if I have problems with something.

I'm not trying to complain or nit-pick, just offering suggestions.

Am I the only one who didn't know this? Oh well, not too big a deal.

Edit: Before I bought I did read the "SageTV Version 4.0 Now Available" post and it didn't say anything about v4 being a free upgrade.

I don't disagree, it's definitely not made well known on Sage's website. Even though I knew it was a free upgrade it took a bit of poking around to find the download...

Back to the topic

Whoo HOOOO!~ It worked. I just copied across my WIZ.BIN and WIZ.BAK (after stopping all SageTV activity on the new HTPC) files and all my recordings and favorites are intact. HIP HIP HOORAY!~
