Slow hard drive in docking station
Hi,
I have an unusual configuration. HP Omnibook 6100 PIII 1.2G, 512, 30GB local drive hooked up to a F1477a docking station wthe 250GB hard dirve. The idea behind this was to have a portable flexible system. I have sage installed and everything works fine as long as I record to the local drive. If I choose to record to the 250GB dock drive the video is choppy (intermittent pauses). Per the sage community page I checked the drive burst speeds and average speeds and it turns out they were miserable. After testing different drives in the system I determined that the dock is the reason for the delay times. Does anyone have any idea how this could be fixed? I have a hauppauge card in on of the dock's pci ports and it works fine. The hard drive in the dock is a seagate ata100 250GB drive. The drive does not appear in the bios. I am assuming that this is because it is in the dock. Is there a workaround to this problem? Would it be possible to put the drive into another system on the network to directly record to it or would I still get access time problems due to the network? Any additional ideas are welcome. Thanks. |

I'm going to guess that the drive in the dock doesn't have DMA enabled for it and it is probably running in PIO mode. Go into Device Manager and find the controller for that drive. Get to the properties-Advanced Settings and change/make sure DMA is enabled for it.

Thx for replying Gerry,
That was the problem, however, when I change the setting to use DMA, the system reverts back to PIO. I am not sure why the system is doing this. In fact, 2 Primary IDE and 2 Secondary IDE controllers are enabled when the system is docked rather 2 devices on each channel which I think is suspect. I will do some troubleshooting over the weekend and see if I can resolve the issue. If anyone has any ideas please feel free to key in. Thx. |

After some troubleshooting, I still cannot get the devices on my dock to be accessed via DMA. I have tried everything I can think of including updating the system BIOS. Could this be a jumper setting problem? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
