What do I need?

Hello, I've had purchased a Hauppauge 250 bundled with streamzap remote and sagetv for almost a year now. Recently we got digital cable with Mediacom in which we need a Motorala 1700 cable box.

Well I got the cable box running into the hauppage card and everything looks great but in order to tune and switch stations I have to use the cable remote which has an odd delay till it switches in sagetv. Not for sure but the delay could be the time it takes to process through the mpeg card and to the monitor.

Anywho I wondered what I would need in order to be able to control the changing of channels, etc with my streamzap remote through sagetv. I figure I need this USB-UIRT dealy so I just ordered it but do I need this girder software as well? Again I simply want to be able to select recordings, channels, shows, set up future recordings, etc all through Sagetv's wonderfull EPG and not have to mess with mediacom's programming guide or its remote.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry if this has been answered numerous times also.

Reading some on USB-UIRT's site I see that because of sage's built in support for this device you wouldn't really need girder for the way I want to use it.

So I would need to keep the streamzap's ir reciever installed to continue to command sagetv the way I always have, install the USB-UIRT when I get it and teach it the commands from the motorola cable box's remote (if codes aren't availble) so when I use the streamzap's remote to browse through sagetv's EPG and make a selection it will tell the USB-UIRT to change to the appropriate channel via the IR signal/codes it learned from the Mediacom cable box? Same goes for setting up recordings in sagetv?

Thanks

Yes, the delay is due to needing to encode the video, save it to disk, read it from disk, decode & display it. Everything is recorded before shown w/the 250.

No, you don't need Girder, but it sounds like you figured that out:

Technically, you wouldn't even need to use the Streamzap's receiver -- you could just use the remote (or almost any remote for that matter) with the USB-UIRT acting as the receiver also. It comes down to whether you like the streamzap software better -- maybe you control other programs with it too? Otherwise, the USB-UIRT could be used directly by SageTV to receive remote commands.

You'll probably just have to reconfigure your source to have it start using the USB-UIRT to change the channels for you.
