Firewire Drives

Has anyone had trouble recording 6gb per hour quality to a USB or Firewire drive?

What about to a network drive?

I am considering purchasing a 400gb portable firewire drive. Is this a feasible option?

if I remember right firewire's bandwidth (peak optimal that is) is 480mbit/sec... That should be plenty fast enough for 6 gig per hour.

USB 2.0 is 480mbits/sec and firewire is 400mbits/sec, both should be more than fast enough.

I had the hardest time with Firewire. Playback would freeze regularly using MPEG-2 Max Quality, and on reboots any FW drives that were Dynamic had to be manually activated in Disk Management afterwards. Disk chaining also did not work well. One of my Maxtor 200GB drives would become undetectable every few weeks and need to be powered off/on. Could have been the FW card I was using (tried 2 different ones though).

I ditched FW and went back to USB - not a single problem since. Strange.
