Password protect Sage Server

Is there a way to password protect the Sage server- or to only allow connections by ip or mac address? (Im at college, so my Sage server is open to anyone who can find it right now.)

I don't know if Sage has such features, but one way or the other, you should get yourself a firewall box.

There is at least one person on your network who is interested in what you are doing on your computer.

I do have a NAT router that I use- but there is no way on the router to password protect or specify. They have access control for wireless, one thinks that there has to be routers out there with access control for the WAN.

If you are using a NAT router, and your Sage server is behind it (plugged into it), and the college network is plugged into the router's WAN, then the only way that anyone outside of your NAT router would have access to your Sage server is if you forward the ports to the Sage server. Even if you do that, any router these days allows you to create a firewall rule to only forward ports for requests from certain ip addresses.

I want to connect to the server across the WAN - like when Im at work. But I figure someone is only going to find SAGE if they are looking for it by scanning the WAN for the specific port- and then they need a copy of client as well. Maybe its not so much an issue.

You're really not going to get good results if you're thinking of streaming SageTV over the Internet or even a WAN unless you really have a fat pipe. It's not designed for that. If you want to do that look at something like www.orb.com.

We get about 3000K across campus - is that enough?

I don't think so. Seeing a slow hard drive can sometimes cause stuttering. Your pipeline works out to be 3MB. People have problems with 802.11b at 11MB so I don't think that will be fast enough.
