digital audio

hi, i use a hauppauge 150 as my capture device for sage.
i have a fancy sound card and was wondering if i could use it for the audio capture of tv shows... instead of the hauppauge audio in.

more importantly, this is optial audio in... can sage handle this?

Nope. Plus there would be a timing issue if you get the audio from somewhere else.

Just to clarify, it is not just SageTV that can not record Digital Audio. AFAIK their is no device on the market beyond the HDTV stuff that will allow you to do this.

The only PVRs I know that will handle 5.1 audio are the DirectTivo units and HDTV PVRs.

Well it is possible, but you must capture the audio and video separately (different programs) then you must process the audio to get it to the correct format, and the mux the audio and video together. There is no all-in-one solution for recording video with digital audio, except when you capture a bitstream.

By bitstream, I mean audio/video muxed bitstream, like OTA HD, or digital cable direct off the line. ie where you're not capturing audio or video, just data.
