What does directX 9 give me?

I'm looking to upgrade my Gforce 2 MX400 AGP4x card in my P4 2.0Ghz Dell, to something a little faster. I don't need a lot of performance improvement, but was looking for something <$50.

It looks like I can get an ATI9250 for $35ish with directX 8 support, or by a Geforce FX5200 for <$40ish with directX 9 support.

Just wondering what the difference is? I play some games, but no fast first person shooters, I watch some video from my Sage server. If I were to want to watch TS streams which would be better?

thanks,

I'm curious about this too. I've been running my Sage box off a GF2 MX I got for free because the VGA doesn't output the color red, but the s-video works fine. I have been considering an upgrade lately.

Why not get some with more power like GF 6200 or up 6600.
