New user - fine tuning

Hi all,

Been playing with SageTV for a few days now, and I'm quite impressed.

I have two small problems though, that I haven't been able to find solutions to. I'm using the standard trial version download.

The first is that when I'm playing a recording the "Controls" (ie: FF, playtime, etc) aren't completely shown on the screen. It's as if the control overlay is larger than the current screen and is partially hidden.

The second may not be a SageTV issue, but a lot of people using similar hardware may mean someone here has experienced the same issue. I'm using a nvidia mx4000 to output tv, and what it outputs is on a slight angle. The whole screen is just tilted 2-3 degrees to the left. I've looked all throughout the Nvidia settings etc, but haven't found anything that lets me make minute adjustments to fix it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Zaq

You can adjust for overscan by going to Setup-Detailed Setup-Multimedia-Overscan Settings

Most likely, this is your TV. Usually CRT, or Standard Televisions are affected by the Earth's magnetic poles, and certain TVs are affected by it more than others. Some TVs have adjustments for this, but it's usually in the high end ones.

Would this be the case if it only happened while doing output through the MX4000? Normal TV is fine. I'll check the TV itself tonight for those settings, it's a JVC I'Art.

If you tune to a channel like CNN or HNN for your normal TV signal. At the bottom of the screen, where they usually scroll text and such, do you see a slight tilt on the video as opposed to the bottom of the screen? If so, you are getting the same thing with normal TV too.
TV signals are overscanned. This means that the picture may be slightly tilted, but it is overlapping the screen, so you wouldn't see the edges of the picture and notice it as easily. There is an overscan option in the Nvidia drivers, I don't know where at the moment, but that will push the edges over the viewable area so you don't see the tilt as much.
Hope this helps.

I only really see it in the SageTV menu, but once noticed I see it everywhere. I'll check normal TV now too.

I see, you can overscan the SageTV Menu, but, yes, there are hard lines on the edges of the SageTV interface, so it is much easier to see distortions, etc......

I get this all the time on my 27", usually the edge distortion follows the selection bar for me.

Vertical lines that should be straight are wavy on my 12 year old 27" TV & I think it looks a slight bit twisted... but I suppose that's to be expected; after all, the thing is almost a teenager, so it ought be to acting up more any time now.

Last year I got a new 34" widescreen HD Ready Panasonic and there was a very noticeable tilt to the video. Luckily there was an adjustment for that in the Panny's setup. I had to compensate almost the other way virtually the entire amount of available adjustment.

Just to note here that other electrical devices very nearby can have an effect on this. My Center surround is mounted right on top of it, and There's a VCR and 2 ReplayTV's on the shelf directly above the TV (the center surround sits on the TV and the shelf is right on top of the surround), and then on the left side of the entertainment center is my entire AV collection which consists of a Pre/Pro processor, 7 channel Amp, DVD player, Roku Photobridge, and this thing called a cassette deck (haven't fired that up in about a year).

If I turn off all the AV stuff the tilt is nowhere near as bad, but still slightly there.
