SageTV Management Application
Has anyone produced, or thought of producing, a client management application for SageTV? For setting up complex series settings, or managing wiz.bin, or doing setup?
It seems to me to make sense to have two interfaces for doing stuff in things like Sage - the simplified, remote control intended interface we have and a client app intended to be used by someone sat in front of a proper monitor with a keyboard and mouse. Just a thought. |

There's a larger problem than just reverse engineering the wiz.bin file. Been there, done that, for the v1.4 wiz.bin. No sooner had I finished that task than did they encrypt it for v2.0+, so there's a double layer of work required.
I still kept my copy of v1.4 and the format in case I ever wanted to do this as a fun project. I have some special skills in computer cryptography, and had spent part of a day on it in 9/04, but decided my time was spent better on more productive (and likely) additions to SageTV. The main reason given for the encryption at the time is that zap2it data is stored in wiz.bin and Frey didn't want to give open access to that crunched zap2it scheduling info. 50-50 if Studio opens an API to that file/data or decrypts it, but it has to allow some access because Nielm has to get it from somewhere. Don't think they can talk about the details how, because of the proprietary nature of Studio. |

I would imagine that the SageTV licensing agreement probably has something in there about not reverse-engineering their work. I don't have it here, but that's a pretty common clause. And that's exactly what would be happening if you wound up decrypting their proprietary data files.
Edit: The EULA, found in your SageTV dir, does indeed mention not reverse engineering any part of the application. A few posts of this thread have been removed, since the forum's purpose is not to facilitate breaking that agreement. - Opus4 |
