Question CC vs. Subtitle?

Hi all,

I recently gave my set top DVD player to my best friend & his wife, since I'm using my PC for all media functions.

They use one of those "TV Guardian" boxes, which basically reads the CC and mutes the volume based on offensive dialogue.

But they said they couldn't get it to work w/ the DVD player. I asked them if they tried turning on the subtitles, but they said "Subtitles aren't the same thing as CC".

Is that correct? I thought CC on a DVD was just an English subtitle?

Yup, they're actaully different, CC is text data embedded in the off-picture area of the video stream (so-called Line 21), while subtitles are a subpicture on the DVD, they are actually (for lack of a better explanation) a picture overlayed on top of the video. ie subtitles are actaully part of the active video once they leave the player.
