SageTV Client on a WAN

Does anyone know if it is possible to use SageTV client on a WAN? I have the Web interface(works great), I can use client around my home on my other PC's including wireless. All work great but is is possible to use Client outside my network?

If so, please share how to set this up.

Thanks,

Boxpin

Please describe what you (exactly) mean.

The limiting factor will likely be bandwidth, as it almost always is in a WAN situation. If you have the bandwidth, then it shoudl be possible to setup anything you can do on a LAN.

You would basically need 5Mpbs of upload bandwidth in most cases. If you record at a higher bitrate than the standard you would need more, like 10Mbps of upload. If you have a connection that can swing that, then you will be good.

Well, he could have a FIOS connection, in which case I'm very jealous.

The easiest way is to setup a VPN, dial in, and you're set. The hard way is to use a no-ip like service, and type the location in, remembering to forward appropriate ports etc.

But like everyone else said - you'll need a big data pipe.

Here is an update.

I do not have an super fast connection, it's Cable. I am only tinkering, experimenting, learning.

I installed the client at work then opened these ports on my router.
42024 is for the client/server connection
7818 is for streaming
7760 is for the EPG download

It launched and connected. I can move around without issue but when I try to watch I get this error...see attached.

I'd recommend getting a network sniffer like etherpeek and run the client local so you can see what the traffic/ports are, then open those up.

Even though you have a cable connection I'm betting it's not fast enough and Sage sees the delay as a time out and errors. Your cable connection is probably 1.5Mpbs or maybe up to 4Mpbs. Not good enough. This product is not designed for client/server over the WAN.

You can use this:

Rather CPU intensive, but it does work.
