Windows NT

Has anyone run Sage under Windows NT 4.0?

I am thinking of adding Sage to my server which runs NT 4.0.

From the installation page of SageTV:

Quote:
PC Operating System: Microsoft Windows 98SE, 2000 SP3 or higher, ME or XP (Windows Media Center PCs are also supported and meet the system requirements for SageTV)
It does not look like it is supported...

I never really try it my self it maybe possable but WindowsNT 4.0 only support up to DirectX 3.0a and you must install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or higher which only supports the DirectDraw, DirectSound and DirectPlay components of DirectX.

Windows NT Server is still viable but I would consider Windows NT Workstation a dead product.

Viable for what? It's an unsupported OS and the supported version of DirectX it can run eliminates most of your current applications that have anything to do with PVR, media or just about any other application. The only reason it runs in the Data center here at work is to run an unsupported app from a vendor who went out of business. The app won't run on anything else. Most people run NT because they don't really have a choice. It's also a security risk.

Viable as a file server/webserver/ftp server.. it still does these things very well.

In addition, I use it as my PDC and also my print server to several HP JetDirect devices throughout the house.

That qualifies as viable to me, however I agree it is not viable for media applications as it was never intended to be used that way. I still find it very useful for these needs especially on older hardware that you want to function as a true server. If you configure your network correctly there is little to no security threat. (as if using XP isn't a security risk )

Then again you are singing to the wrong choir as I tend to squeeze the life out of all my hardware. I still use my Amiga 4000.

True. For the basics you can get by with NT. From a security aspect I was just saying if there's something out there to exploit a weakness in NT it's not like you're going to get a patch from MS to fix it anymore. But a correctly-configured server goes a long way to avoiding that. Always did enjoy the Amiga too.

I spent a week trying to find drivers and to get wintv2000 to install on my file server at work. Never got the pvr-250 drivers (or wintv2000) to install.
I really wanted to use the redundant PSUs and the fiberchannel Raid5 disk array though...

I tried it yesterday and... after much fiddling, tweaking, downloading and installing... it didn't work.

Rather surprisingly though the problem was JAVA! As soon as I tried to start sage the JVM failed unable to find something like "set thread execution state" in kernel32.dll. I suspect that this may be related to the downlevel version of DirectX.

I run Windows NT 4.0 server as my file server and it works a treat and the committed memory in task manager averages about 27MB!!! It is quite happy and rock solid serving 1.25TB of video data over my LAN>

Anyway I ordered a copy of Server 2003 on ebay so will be upgrading shortly.

Why couldn't you have seperate PC running SageTV mapped to your server to record?

That's exactlt what I did have, but decided to do some server consolidation to reduce my power requirements.

Maybe we could start a competition for most exotic/unsupported/pointless platform to attempt to install Sage onto.

I could do my part by running a client and server on two VMWare virtual machines on the same box

Nick.

Or get it to run on an Amiga 4000.

errr... Windows NT.... how but upgrading to a more recent soon to be unsupported OS like... Windows 2000 Server ????

Yes Window NT works quite well for 'limited' functionality.... but Windows 2000 (2003 is even better) just has that little bit of extra stability
