Making My Projector Silent?

While my HTPC isn't "silent", my projector is louder than the computer.

Has anybody replaced the fan in their projector? Do most use the same fans as a computer?

That's the last thing I'd do. If you're projector is too loud, you'll probably have to build a hushbox for it, or buy a quieter PJ.

The other thing is make sure your PJ isn't in high altitude mode.

What's a hush box? (And what's 'high altitude mode'?)

Thanks!

A hush box, is basically a box that isolates your PJ from you, blocking the sound. You should be able to find something on the AVS forum about building one.

High Altitude Mode is something your PJ might have, my MT700 has it, basically it's a setting that runs the fan at a higher speed to compensate for less dense air (and hence less efficient cooling) at high altitudes.

One more thing to check, is make sure your lamp isn't in high, it should be quieter if you run it in low (aka "Eco", "Cinema", "Standard") mode.

You may also try ducting the exhaust air away from you so the noise is flowing away from your ears. Be certain that any materials you use for ducting/boxes are suitable for high heat since projector exhaust temps are very high-over 120F in some cases.
You also don't want to restrict air flow too much since the projector can overheat causing damage.
When was the last time you cleaned the filter? Most manufacturers recommend filter cleaning every 100 hours and the filter to be changed when the lamp is changed.
