The ARC-1170 is a 24-port PCI-X RAID 5/6 card; versions are also available with 16, 12, 8 and 4 ports. An Intel XOR engine is used, and cache memory can be added by using DDR333 SO-DIMMs, which seems to be a rather reasonable choice today. The largest modules around hold up to 1 GB, which should be more than sufficient. Areca supports SATA II speeds at up to 300 MB/s, but the data sheet does not mention command queuing at all.Areca's management software is called McRAID and is available for Windows, FreeBSD and Linux. We found most of the interesting features were available, such as online capacity expansion.
