hauppauge 350 + ?

I have a one-tuner system, with a pvr350. We mostly use the hardware decoding on the 350 for watching tv.

I'm considering buying a second card, but I don't want to fiddle around a whole bunch or spend a lot of cash.

Can I get by with buying a PVR150 as the second card, and just using that for encoding, and continue to use the TV out on my 350 for all the decoding? Or am I getting myself into trouble here, and I should spend the extra cash and get a 250?

!

yes the PVR-150 will work with the 350. But if you use the remote on the PVR-350, make sure you buy the PVR-150, non "MCE" model, which also comes with a remote. Hauppauge has the PVR-150MCE which is cheaper because it doesn't include a remote and IR blaster. But all their "MCE" models cause Remote control conflicts with non "MCE" models, and currently, there's no definite way to fix it. I bought a 500 and added it to my 350 with no problems whatsoever. I should point out that I don't use the 350 remote though. I use a USBUIRT, and love it. It uses two of it's zones to control my 2 STBs, and the third decodes direct from the coax.

I highly recommend it.

Wait, I don't understand. What if I only use the 150 for encoding, and never plug in its remote-sensor? Do I have to use a card-specific remote? Sage can't integrate input from the two cards?

The Hauppauge remote software can only operate the remote from a single card & you can't really control which card it 'sees', so you have to plug the remote sensor into the one card it decides to use. The problem with the MCE versions of the cards (among: 350, 150, 250, 150mce, 250mce, 500mce) is that they don't have an IR plug, but the IR driver doesn't seem to understand that and often insists on using the remote from a remote-challenged card... and it obviously can't do that in real life.
