SageTV has grown be more than just a PVR software. Infact, future version will be called SageTV Media Center, which is more correct than PVR since it does music, pictures, and DVD, not jus PVR. So its not so strange to ask for some non-PVR features.

this is just personal preference and varies for everyone whether they notice it or not, much like TV output qualities. It is fine for one and unacceptable to aonther. When I first tried DirectTV and Digital Cable and discovery the lag when changing channels, it really got on my nerves. I was used to instant channel changing with analog cable. I've been on Digital cable for a few years now, and to this day, the lag still annoys me. So again, it varies for different people, some get used to it, some don't.

Glad that helped.

Last night I was experimenting a bit and changed the default recording qualities to MPEG Max.

This made channel changes even quicker and smoother without the hickups associated with lesser qualities.

What remote did you give her ?

Kenc, sorry just saw your Q.

The one that came with the hauppauge card but with most fancy commands removed(eg watched, delete, favourite on color buttons).

Modified the Main Menu and removed the Set-up from the Menu.
It is only accessible from a single key on the remote I use.

This way there is no way she can get in and screw up the settings.

The picture quality difference is probably because the record quality settings are different. If you want higher quality, you need a higher data rate/quality setting. I also suggest tweaking brightness and contrast settings to match live (direct to cable/ant) tv.

For live TV, truly the simplest thing to do is switch your TV input. For sports you need a high data rate, and I rarely record sports, so I can set my default data rate to a reasonable level (I have a custom rate set that is just slightly higher than "Great", it's exactly 2.35GB per hour so I can archive 2 hrs to DVD).
