Using Full SageTV as Client

Hi There,

I'm attempting to setup 2 pc's each with a full install of sageTV.

The idea being:
PC#1 is the main server
PC#2 acts as a network encoder and a client to view recordings, schedule etc.

I'm going this route because sageRecorder does not support a PVR-150 low profile card.

I've been successfull in getting #2 to act as a network encoder.
I've had no luck getting #2 to act as a client.

I've followed the instructions here which seems to work to get the network encoder working.

But how do i get sagetv to work as a client?

Buy and install the client.

He means when using the full version of SageTV to act as a network encoder + client.

I just checked on this: I believe you need to use the "-client" command line parameter (without the quotes, of course) for the network encoder copy of SageTV. I'll go update that other post too...

Right. I thought when you were using full Sage as an encoder it is acting more like a client because it "connects" to the server install. Thus my purchase suggestion. My bad.

Concerning the "-client," I have a server running SageTV in service mode only, is it possible to install and run the same SageTV (Full) on a different computer to use as client? Currently, I'm using SageTV Client to connect to the server, but if its possible to connect with SageTV (Full) as a client then that will give me an extra client license.

Opus4-
Thanks! The "-client" command line switch is exactly what i needed. It's now working but not very stable. I'm thinking I'll zero the harddrive and reinstall just XP & Sage to see if it gets better. I had a Java .dll cause a BSOD last night. very strange.

mayamaniac-
To my knowledge you would need a seperate full sagetv license for the other install. I can't see a reason to go a full install if you only need client functionality.

FYI-

After a clean install this is working great. Much better than SageRecorder ever did for me at least.

Regarding PC #2 (the full install of sageTV being used as a network encoder + client)

1. Is is necessary to configure the recording paths on #2 or does the communication with the main sagetv server handle this?

I did do this during setup but I'm wondering if I needed to. I'ld like to add some storage space to the network and am wondering if I need to configure this on both pc's or just the main.

I've been running sageTV as a service so the network encoder is available all the time. Then running the ui with the -client command line switch.

Keep in mind that I don't use SageTV as a network encoder (or any other network encoder, for that matter), so maybe I shouldn't comment here... but the normal usage of SageTV is that the actual server controls where files are saved. If you were to look at the client's list of recording dirs, I'm guessing that it will show the exact same list as what is shown on the server PC.
