Smile New Guy

Hi, All
I just joined the HTPC arena with the purchase of the SageTV Dual-Tuner Bundle & Remote.
I got tired of hearing about how great TiVo is from my co-workers so I looked into buying one. A hundred bucks up front and $15/month was not cool so I looked into making my own. The only problem I could forsee was the schedule. That's about when I stumbled upon this evil place. I tried out a couple days of the 15 day trial with my ancient TVWonder (only to find out they aren't compatible grr) and decided to go with it anyway.
Glad to see that the forums for the software I purchased are active. There's nothing quite so desparing as asking an empty room for help.
cheers to you guys

Yes this place is evil...I now have 6 Tuners, 2 MediaMVPs, and 2 PC based clients. I am looking at building a raid box for storage since my case is full of hard drives I have been adding for the last 2 years.

Enjoy SageTV and if you have any problems know we are here to help.

John

Only one tuner, using basic cable. Fairly straightforward SageTV setup (if there is such a thing ), but we all dabble in a little of everything HTPC related, so welcome!

Thanks, everyone.
A few observations thus-far:
  1. Cat avatar. Is this in fashion here or is it used to signify clique membership? I have a pair of cats that I could squeeze into a little pic but don't want to offend anyone by not asking first.
  2. Titles. I'm guessing that these are linked to post count (that's why I'm a 'Sage Member' and insomniac is a 'Sage Icon'). What are the thresholds?
  3. Occupations. Seems like most active posters here are computer people (guess you have to be to tackle something like this). Am I correct?
  4. GTG's. Anyone ever got together with other members to talk shop, side-by-side compare, test or fix eachothers systems? Anyone from Phoenix?
I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you, learn from you and, hopefully in the future, to teach.

1: It's in fashion (and I'm decidedly unfashionable) -- it is not a clicque as far as I've been told;
2: Titles are based on post count. I don't know the thresholds.
3: There are definitely a lot of people who manipulate computers for a living here, but I don't think it's a necessity to successfully setup and run a SageTV system.
4: I haven't participated in any get togethers. I live near two of the moderators, so I know I'd just be outclassed if we were to get together

Welcome aboard.

Cat avatars are absolutely required if you want to use this forum. Or, maybe they aren't required. I suppose you can decide. So far, I don't believe anyone has been offended by a cat picture, but I suppose no one really tried using an offensive one yet. For some interesting reading, you might want to check out: Cat avatars - what's the deal???

Yes, most of them are linked to post count. If you _really_ need to know the threasholds, I can probably look that up some time. (I don't think it is posted publicly anywhere, but I could be wrong.)

I think most of us just get together in the forum & use our avatars to let others know what... we... look... like. Um. Never mind.

Sorry, but I just had to take a break from serious work. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome!

I think the post threasholds are something like 50, 100, 500. I've been an afficionado for what seems like FOREVER...getting close though.

You can become an icon just like me!

Seems like after 500, I really slowed down. Guess it's because it took 500 posts to get a well-oiled-SageTV-machine.

If I was going to use a cat avatar, it'd probably be this one or this one ..

But I'm a big fan of and and hence my name and avatar.

Close! I had a minute just now, so I looked it up: 30, 100, 500.

It really seems like there should be some more steps... I think that came up at some point, but I don't have time for that search right now.

I always assumed it was because of my good looks.

Lol, now I know why Sage has come to occupy so much of my time. I've been in a trance!

I can't stand cats but thats more of a biological thing since I'm dreadfully allergic to them. Never even noticed the titles before, I can't believe I have over 200 posts here. I really like this forum and it was one of the driving factors in me picking Sage over BTV. I usually hate dealing with established tech support and almost always find better info from a good solid community who are using the products in their daily lives. Sage's forums has never dissapointed.

Are most people here tech people in their work lives? For me, no. I spent most of my career in the financial sector. Though tech is a serious hobby for me (I do have a dusty comp sci degree but out of practice at actual code work has made me a noob at development again besides the odd script or two). Out of college I thought I'd become a tech editor and get to play with everything but never be forced to use them. However, I quickly discovered that finance brought in a ton more money.

A get together would be cool. Anyone here in the Philippines? Otherwise I also spend a few months every year in New York. I'd be down for a Sagecon or something.

I really found it bizarre and way inaccurate when Sage sagely suddenly dubbed me an "expert" while in the midst of building and configuring my system!
