Question How smart does intelligent recording seem to you?

I'm trying to see how people feel about Sage's "Intelligent Recording" Feature...

For me it doesn't want to learn very well, even with "Aggressive" learning set to true in my stv. I have 4 tuners, been running for about 9 months 24/7, with the odd break to add a tuner or recover from a crash. Don't know if that's a factor..

I've lost count of the number of different shows that keep popping up no matter how many times I've deleted them without watching after setting them as "Don't like".

So my point is, if enough people feel that it's not doing so well how about requesting a "Black list" option, which explicitly states never ever record this show again unless manuall told to do so, either as a manual recording or as an added favorite. Or maybe it has it and I'm missing it..

Answers on a postcard please..

I would be in favor of a 'black list'.

A trick I saw posted somewhere else (sorry I can't remember your name) was to not just hit 'don't like', go into 'additional airings' and hit don't like on all future airings.

I've found that Sage gets the hint after I do that.

Heya,

I love IR! It tag's shows for my wife, daughter and myself quite well. I've used the trick that Crashless mentioned to keep it from tagging shows I dont care for bout once a month. Thus usually happens when my wife or daughter starts channel surf'n selecting channels or shows that they really are not interested in and just walk away. Thus I end up getting 2-6hrs of shows that had nothing to do with any of our interest. Again, going the route that Crashless mentioned really makes a world of difference.
I've also used the web server to tag shows quickly that I do not like that are scheduled to be recorded. Takes about 5min once a month, problem solved.

Hope this helps,
RedR

Don't use it right now.
It eats up to much HD space if you don't find the time to deleted stuff every day. I once went away for a 3 day weekend and IR went ate through 800 gigs of space recording every sci-fi movie or TV show it little heart could find on Star Choice and comcast

Yeah, this is why I have my 'schedule ahead' set for 7 days. If I ever know I'm going away, I'll go through and set don't like on everything I don't want.

If you have lots of favorites set, it shouldn't delete those to record IR shows. So basically all Sage will do is fill up all available space minus space occupied by Favorites or manual records. The way I see it, I have nothing to loose, except missing a cool new show or movie.

I can see how it would be annoying for those who manage their own HD space though. I just let Sage have a few partitions (I think I have 350gb for sage right now) and don't ever look at the drive again.

IR is one the reason SageTV is better than the competition. But to use it, you have to be patient and train it over a long period of time. And training includes setting a lot of DON'T LIKES and deleting of shows that it recorded. But after a while, it will get the point. Also, if you watch LiveTV or like to channel surf a lot, then don't use IR, it'll think you like things that you really don't.

I said it before in other threads regarding IR, we need an STV with more IR controls. In Cayars STV, you have the option to enable "negative aggressive profiling," thats a start, but more is needed, such as an option to ignore LiveTV. And as Crashless mentioned, a blacklist is also a good idea. Not just to set Don't Likes, but set a blacklist on specified channels, time of the day, genres, keywords, etc, that IR should not record.

For example, If you don't ever want to watch:
1. anything on Lifetime channel
2. anything from 2am to 6am
3. the news or reality TV shows
4. anything with the word Barny or Ryan Seacrest in it

You should have the options to put those things in a blacklist and IR will follow those guidelines. I hope SageTV 3.0 will have at least some of these options.

I wouldn't be opposed to that being set by default.

Whilst having parameters to tune IR I'd settle for the Black list option... Save complex stuff for Sage 4.0

My wife likes watching live TV, and a collection of the most awful shows. That I can deal with, but she watches live tv before the show (Can't wait to watch the recording). Those tail ends of shows that wind up being watched, get inserted into IR and all hell breaks loose.

I literally have set "Don't like" over 100 times on some of these shows, but if she watches the last 5 mins of it before the show she wants it seams to undo all the work.
